Background•
Councilmember Longville is leading the effort to adopt the "San Bernardino" as one of the city's
official songs. British musician Jeff Christie recorded the song in 1970. As you recall, the son
was played during the October 17th council meeting. The lyrics provide a positive image of the
City and a recent SUN Newspaper poll indicated that 82% of the voters believe the "S
Bernardino song is a good candidate for the city song. an
Although not many cities have an official city song, the City of San Francisco has two.

Jeff Christie's company, Christabel Music owns the copyright to the song and has agreed to
allow the City to adopt it. The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers
(ASCAP) has confirmed that our local cable franchisees have paid the appropriate license fees
which allows the non-commercial city channel to play the song. However, in order to play the
song at city events, city buildings, libraries, parks, and other city owned facilities, an ASCAP
license for local government must be obtained. In addition to covering the "San Bernardino"
song, all other ASCAP copyrighted musical compositions written or published by ASCAP
members would be covered under the ASCAP license for local governments. The cost of the
license is based on city population and would be approximately $1400 annually for the City of
San Bernardino. y
Fiscal Impact•
None to adopt the song. An ASCAP license agreement will be needed in order to play the son
at city owned facilities city events. The annual cost of this license is approximately $1400 also
on today's agenda).
Recommendation:
Adopt Resolution.

5 WHEREAS, the "San Bernardino" song was a major pop hit by British musician Jeff
Christie in 1970; and

7 WHEREAS, Jeff Christie has given his permission to the City to use the "San
Bernardino" song as the City's official song; and
8
WHEREAS, the lyrics of the song have a specific emotional appeal to those born and
9 raised in San Bernardino and to visitors of our city; and
10 WHEREAS, the lyrics maintain a positive image for our City that will be recognizable
I 1 to residents, business owners, and visitors; and
12 WHEREAS, there are numerous versions of the song available in many languages
\Nhich could be used in worldwide promotional campaigns; and

WHEREAS, results from a poll conducted by the San Bernardino County SUN
14 Newspaper indicated that 82% of the voters believe that the "San Bernardino" song is a good
15 candidate for an official city song.

CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO AS FOLLOWS:
