Clark, City Clerk 2004. The foregoing resolution is hereby approved this day of Approved as to Form and legal content: JAMES F. PENMAN, City Attorney .--1 Judith Valles, Mayor City of San Bernardino p~ , l c o c Exhibit "A" Pro2ram Information: 1. Describe the process used to determine where the greenhouse will be located, what plants will be grown, and how plants will be used. Site will be determined by availability of garden space, distance to water supply, visibility from the road, and full support from the principal of the school. Plants grown will consist of vegetables, herbs and fruits. Seedlings grown in the greenhouse will be distributed to all six (6) school garden sites. 2. How will the greenhouse help you meet your teaching and learning goals? Students at the garden sites currently utilize the Junior Master Gardener handbooks for classroom and outdoor gardening activities and lessons. Having a greenhouse will allow the students to experience gardening at a whole new level. Starting plants from seeds, transplanting the seedlings, distribution of plants, handling and preparing the produce for a mini-farmers market, handling funds, studying price changes in the stores, developing a low- cost system for selling the produce to local community members, prepare nutrition information (fresh vs. canned), promote the eating of 5 servings of fruits and vegetables a day, measure differences in plant growth (indoors vs. outdoors). Students will learn how to let plants go to seed and harvest the seeds for the next years planting. 3. What will you grow in the greenhouse? What will these plants be used for? Students will grow fruits, vegetables and herbs. Seedlings grown in the greenhouse will be distributed in the Spring to all six (6) school garden sites. The students after-school will sell produce grown in the gardens on bi-weekly bases after-school hours as a way to raise funds for gardening supplies and field trips (gardening focused). 4. Explain how a greenhouse will help you garden more effectively with children/youth. During the FalilWinter months gardens usually go dormant and the student are not allowed outside in the open. Having a greenhouse would provide the students the opportunity to continue their gardening education year round. It would also provide them a location to try other gardening experiments such as hydroponics. If awarded the horticultural equipment will enhance the learning process for elementary school students participating at our current school garden sites. School Garden Sites .
