Background The Mentoring Program was established in April of 1995 as a project of the Mayor's Youth Task Force. The initial funding came from the City and the San Bernardino City Unified School District as a partoership to provide both mentoring and the Late Night Hoops Program. After this initial funding, the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department pursued grant funding to sustain the mentoring program as follows: . Community Challenge Grant (FOCUS) - 1997 to present . Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Grant (JUMP) - 1997 to 2000 . California Endowment Grant - 2000 to 2002 Because of the cuts in State funding for grants that have sustained the Mentoring Program in the past, the Department is seeking out other sources of funding such as this grant from the Mervyo's 2004 Community Giving Program in the amount of $2,500 to assist in continuing the Mentoring Program. The attached grant application was completed and submitted to Mervyn's in order to meet their May 31, 2004 deadline. This grant will fund salary and benefits of the Mentoring Coordinator for 3 weeks, as we await the decision of other grant application opportunities. Financial Impact There will be no general fund cost to the City and there is no grant match. If awarded, this grant of $2,500 will assist in operating the mentoring program as the department seeks other funding opportunities during the FY 2004-05. The Mayor and Common Council of the City of San Bernardino hereby ratify the submittal of a grant application from the Mervyn's 2004 Community Giving Program in the amount of $2,487.04 relating to the provision of youth mentoring services for the period of July 1, 2004 through June 30, 2005. Both the California Mentor Quality Assurance Standards and Governor's Mentoring Partnership certify our mentoring program Project Description: We are requesting $ 2,487.04 to continue with the parenting classes in Spanish & English for mentee's parents and mentor training in identification of risk factors for children. The classes, conferences, and workshops in such topics as drugs & alcohol abuse, teen pregnancy prevention, youth development, ADHD, alternative to gang activity, health provision, referrals and behavior management will educate and help to reduce or eliminate family violence. The Mentoring Program works with 52 partner agencies. Volunteers: Not only are mentors serving as volunteers, but also the CSBMP provides opportunities for other volunteers to be involved as childcare providers, clerical assistants, camping trip leaders, transportation providers, and presenters in various activities, workshops, and conferences.
