To Learn May 23, 1995 councilman Ralph Hernandez City of San Bernardino 300 North "0" Street San Bernardino, CA 92418 Dear Councilman Hernandez: Last evening an overflow crowd attended the Lytle Creek Elementary School's Junior Police Academy graduation exercises. Nowhere in this city, state, or country would you find a better group of bright eyed, motivated, enthusiastic young citizens. Recently I sent you, at the Board of Education's request, a letter expressing our great disappointment that this program has now ended according to a letter we received from Chief of Police Wayne Harp. (A copy of our letter, dated May 5, 1995, is attached). I have not received any communication from this letter or from the earlier one sent to Chief Harp (also attached). In less than five weeks this program would have been scheduled to begin again as Lytle Creek Elementary School is on a year-round calendar. If delay in response is caused by belief that the school program begins in September, please be aware that there is little time left. The program is most able to be successful if it has a good beginning. We would urgently request your review of this matter. Sincerely, ~L~ ~ Ed.D. Box 1559 San Bernardino, CA 92401-1559 Dear Chief Harp: We are in receipt of your April 20, 1995, letter informing ':.he school district of the funding elimination for the Junior police Academy and Intermediate police Academy programs. This, of course, will be a great disappointment to the schools and to the students. It is our further belief that this will be a loss to our community as well as to the police Department because these programs help to develop pride in both. While I do understand budget reductions and constraints, we urge your reconsideration of these programs. We appreciate all the past support and cooperation from everyone in this matter. sincerely, -Wt: BORIN Assistant supe Administrative Ed.D. endent Services HLB:pg cc: Mayor Tom Minor E.
