HomeMy WebLinkAboutAnimal Services Update to Council 3-19-2025Update to the Mayor and City Council on Programs and Services Department of Animal Services Presented by: Animal Services Director, Kris Watson, MPA March 19, 2025 Partnerships 2024 Department Statistics Intake Data •9,698 Live cats and dogs were impounded alive in 2024 •6,720 Dogs •2,978 Cats •+33% over 2023 Outcomes •3,520 Dogs and cats were adopted by the public •846 Dogs and cats were returned to their owners •2,051 Dogs and cats went to rescue organizations •16 Feral cats returned to their neighborhoods •1,170 Dogs and 1,533 cats were euthanized •133 Dogs and 157 cats died in care •15 Dogs and 24 cats were lost in care •Dog Save Rate = 82% •Cat Save Rate = 53% Field Operations •9,990 Field Actions Completed in 2023 •Responded to assist LA in the recent Wildfires Regional Partnership 362 6% 870 14% 22 0% 54 1% 751 12% 4,136 67% Partnership Intakes 06/26/2024-12/31/2024 •Grand Terrace - 22 •Loma Linda - 54 •Colton - 362 •Rialto - 751 •Fontana - 870 •San Bernardino - 4,136 •Contract review and revision •Training Assistance to Partners •Social Media Outreach/Sharing •Long-term Plans Frequently Asked Questions •Department staff work 365 days a year, including Holidays •Our Animal Control Commission meets quarterly on the second Wednesday of January, April, July and October at 3:30PM in the Feldheym Library •Cats and Dogs are fed a full bowl of food daily •Puppies, kittens and special cases are fed more often as needed •Sedation is used prior to euthanasia in all instances where it does not prolong an animal’s suffering •Unless an animal is surrendered or confiscated from an owner, we don’t know their health or behavioral history •Pregnancies are not always noticeable at intake – they may be recently pregnant and don’t show signs at the time of adoption •Staff may misgender at intake if an animal’s behavior does not allow a full physical exam •The Department received approval from the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians to utilize the spay/neuter funding from the $1.5 Million dollar grant for shelter animals adopted by the public •The Department will TNR feral cats to a community only if they are healthy – we work with colony or community cat caretakers to assist with other cats Facility Improvements New Medical Isolation Ward New Customer Service Center New Kennel Buildings Facility Improvements, Cont’d Adoption Satellite Center on 8th Street 1543 W. 8th Street, San Bernardino, CA 92411 Veterinary Care •Veterinary Per Diem Position •4 Applicants for these shifts since the positions was posted •Conversion of the former on-site cat building to a fully operational clinic and surgery suite •Grant Funded Voucher Program •Partnership with The Paw Mission Community Programs and Services Volunteer Opportunities •Playgroups •Pawsitive Playtime •Event Booths •Groups •Volunteers donated a total of 5,297 hours to the Department in 2024!
