HomeMy WebLinkAboutMayor and City Council Report 11-6-24New Businesses Coming to San Bernardino During the month of October, the Business Registration Department issued 261 licenses to new businesses ocated in, and doing business in the City. Among San Bernardino’s newest businesses are Dutch Bros Coffee #1 and #2, Chick-fil-A, and the On the Spot Protein and Energy Bar. The new alliance with CHP will pool resources to enhance citywide safety. With additional CHP support, SBPD will strengthen patrols in high-traffic areas, increase rapid response capabilities, and engage in targeted crime prevention operations. Already this year, San Bernardino has seen a significant decline in violent crime, with aggravated assaults down 17%, robberies reduced by 15%, and, most notably, murders down by 33% from the same period last year. This follows an impressive 50% reduction in murders in 2023. Carousel Mall Site Redevelopment Update In recent months, staff has been coordinating with the California Housing and Community Development Department (HCD) on a process to redevelop the mall site to ensure compliance with the Surplus Land Act (SLA). Staff will be bringing an item to Council early next year seeking direction on releasing a Request for Proposal (RFP) for the Carousel Mall site. City Preparing to Begin Park Cleanups Final preparations are now in place ahead of San Bernardino resuming encampment cleanups at City parks. With staff training complete, outreach teams and resources in place, storage facilities secured, and informational materials prepared, the cleanups will be beginning very soon. The San Bernardino Water Department in partnership with the San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District cut the ribbon on a new hydroelectric power project to generate electricity State Water Project water travelling down the mountain from northern California. Now operational, the new turbine can generate up to 24,720 kilowatt-hours (kWh) of renewable energy per day, enough to power 423 homes, saving the Department approximately $365,000 per year. Public Works have installed approximately 96 new streetlights and poles to two neighborhoods in the northern part of the City. The lights were recently activated, bringing a new walkability and sense of security to area residents. Some of these neighborhoods have been without lighting for several years. One area is located between Mountain View Avenue and Sierra Way near Marshall Boulevard. The other includes portions of Sierra Way, Ralston Avenue, Palmyra Avenue and nearby streets. Measure S funds were used for this project. Over 1,700 residents joined with San Bernardino’s finest on to experience the 3rd Coptoberfest activities. There were games, a petting zoo, demonstrations, music, dancing food and so much more to bring the SBPD together with the community. Everyone, especially the kids, had a great time!
