HomeMy WebLinkAboutMayor and City Council Report 6-5-24Annual Homeless Point in Time Count Recent factors included collaboration between the Housing and Homelessness Division, other City Departments, the County, and non-profit partners, as well as the establishment of our Homeless Outreach Team and COAST Teams. The 2024 PITC results show a slight decrease in the City’s homeless population, from 1,507 in 2023 to 1,417. However, San Bernardino continues to have by far the most unhoused residents in the County – 33%. More work needs to be done. Nonetheless, this marks the first decrease in San Bernardino in over a decade. San Bernardino Honors Its Fallen HeroesSan Bernardino Honors Its Fallen Heroes A large crowd of veterans, community members and civic leaders turned out in front of City Hall to remember and salute those that gave their lives in service of our country at a Memorial Day ceremony on Monday, May 27. A keynote speech was given by Commander Jose Mendoza (Navy) of the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 12, and recognitions were made to veterans Nathan James Evans (Army) and Wyatt Vass (Marines). State of the City Presented to Packed House On Thursday, the Mayor and City Council presented its State of the City, highlighting investments being made in San Bernardino by the public and private sector, as well as highlighted the success stories of our hometown and unsung heroes. The event also featured an economic forecast by prominent economist Christopher Thornberg. Public Works Tiger Team Beautifies the Hernandez Community Center The Public Works Tiger Team embarked on a rapid-action project to beautify the exterior areas of the Hernandez Community Center. The team has completely transformed the exterior landscaping. Benches, trees, fragrance plants have been added along with circular seating spots. The pool area has also been updated. Additional upgrades coming soon include a Zen Garden with fragrance plants and updated fencing. This past weekend, 54 dogs and cats were adopted, rescued, or reunited with their families at the Animal Shelter as part of an Adopt- A-Pet Day. From June 18-23, all adoptions at the Shelter will be free and include microchipping, vaccinations, and spay/neuter as part of Animal Services Clear the Shelter Week, which will include an adoption fair on June 22 at Wildwood Park. Finally, beginning later this month, the Shelter will be open to the public on Sunday’s! Adopt a Pet in June Parks and Recreation is bringing back the popular Sizzlin’ Summer Nights Concert Series at the Historic Roosevelt Bowl on eight Thursday nights starting June 6 and running through August 1. Thursday’s concert will feature the funk/soul group Nojac. Upcoming shows will include Motown, Country, Big Band Swing, Latin Soul, Top 40, and two popular Tribute Bands. The concerts are free to attend. Gates open at 5:30 pm with the concert starting at 7:30.
