-------------------------------------------------------------
This item was continued from the Mayor and Council meeting of
November 18, 1985 to allow the City Attorney's office
sufficient time to prepare an ordinance amendment which would
permit billboards within 500 feet of the existing right-of-
way.
The proposed new ordinance was discussed by the Legislative
Review Committee at their meeting of December 5, 1985 and the
Committee incorporated into the ordinance that the replace-
ment signs conform to the nine requirements in Section
19.60.250.A of the San Bernardino Municipal Code for off-
premise signs, with the following exceptions:
1. The display area would be limited to 672
square feet for a single support;
2. A replacement sign could be placed within 660
feet of a freeway or primary street subject to
approval by the Mayor and Common Council and a
written agreement for a period of ten years.
Applicable state law and regulations would
apply, including the 500 foot separation
between signs on the same side of a freeway or
primary highway unless separated by a
building. The sign to be replaced by the
freeway sign must be located near major
streets or in the downtown business district.
Replacement billboards and/or painted bulletins
permitted if they satisfy the above criteria.
