CIT?,- OF SAN BERNARDI~O - REQUE!;T FOR COUNCIL ACTION STAFF REPORT Ouring construction, it was discovered that an unprotected space occurred between the wing wall and barrier wall below the height of the barrier wall at the four corners of the box culvert. These spaces are large enough for a child to pass and possibly fall into the channel. The Contractor will fabricate and install rail protection in these areas on a time and materials basis (Force Account), not to exceed $630.00. After placing the striping on 40th Street, it was discovered that the white stripe and arrows that indicate the narrowing of the two east- bound traffic lanes into one traffic lane was not sufficiently visible to east-bound traffic approaching the box culvert due to the hump (vertical curve) over the box cul vert. To correct thi s potent i a 1 problem, fl exi b 1 e guide markers will be needed that can be seen at a greater distance by approaching traffic, at a price not to exceed $570.00. As both of these changes are safety features, we recommend the approval of Change Order No. Six. The contract was awarded for the low bid price of $558,661.25. Change Order No.6 will increase the contract amount to $534,515.43. URGENCY CLAUSE: This project is nearing completion and it is essential that these necessary additional items of work be authorized as soon as possible. Culvert. An unprotected space large enough for a child to pass was not provided for by the plans. In order to provide protection in these areas, the Contractor must fabricate and install railing. This work will be done at force account not to exceed $630.00. The change order alsq provides for furnishing and placing eight Class I flexible type F guide markers, along the white stripe that merges traffic from two to one traffic lane. A vertical curve over the box' culvert precludes passenger cars from seeing the white stripe.
