team is curr~ntly recognized as one of the premier teams in the country.

All-Stars get going on a roll
By JIM LONG
SuI'! Sport5 Writer
In the world of fastpitch
softball, sponsors are precious,
With good backing, a team can go
a long way toward success,
Back In 1983, a team then
known as the San Bernardino
Budweiser All-Stars enjoyed more
success than nearly any other
team in San Bernardino County,
The Stars' reputation seemed to '
be rising,
But late that year, potential di,
saster struck, Budweiser with-
drew sponsorship of the San Ber-
nardino-based fastpitch softball
team founded in 1979 by Joe Baca
of Rialto, who's also known in the
communit\' as a trustee for the
San Bermirdino Community Col-
lege District.
Two years later, however, the
team has a new sponsor in Miller
Lite beer and a 3+19 record, The
San Bernardino Lite All-Stars, as
they are now known, have their
sights set on reaching the two
most prestigious fast pitch tourna,
ments in the country for the sec-
ond consecutive year: the Interna-
tional Softball Congress World
Tournament set for August 9-18 in
Kimberly, Wisc" and tbe Ameri-
can Softball Association Men's Na,
tionals scbeduled Sept, ~15 in Salt
Lake Cit\',
Tbe Stars bave already won
two tourneys and were second-
place finishers in two more,
They've had an lJ-game winning
streak and their two ace pitcbers
- a pair of New Zealanders
named Glenn Davis (17-61 and
Dave Lowe (12-8) - bave each re-
corded a no-hitter, Lowe's was a
perfect game, the first in club bis,
tory,
"When Budweiser witbdrew
its sponsorsbip:' Baca said, "all
the guys who were playing for me
said 'I'm not going to play if
tbere's no sponsor: I put in an ad
in The Sun asking any player in,
terested in playing for tbe Stars to
come and tryout. It was tbe best
tbing tbat bappened, Tbat's bow
we got tbe rigbt cbemistry,"
Baca, wbo plays catcher and
infielder, and tbree others stayed:
Catcher-first baseman V oyo Cruz,
designated bitter Frank Jimenez
and pitcher Jim Knott (5-5), Every-
body else split, What the Stars got
in return is a tightly knIt team,
"I think tbat cohesiveness witb
that unit is like a chain," said
Joe Baca
, team founder
Baca, "Vou keep tbe cbain togetb-
er and you play better,
"Our team bas the attitude tbat
we can step on tbe field and com-
pete against anyone, We don't rely
on one player to pull our team,
Man,for,man, some teamsbave
better ballplayers tban we do, but
tbey aren't a better unit."
Tbe unit Is comprised entirely
of San Bernardino residents, witb
the exception of rigbt fielder Pat
Dominguez, wbo makes bis borne
in Barstow, The 14-man squad,
plus Zane Smitb, manager for tbe
past three years, come from all
walks of life,
Jimenez, wbo along with Baca
is tbe only remaining member of
tbe original 1979 Stars, leads the
team witb a ,418 batting average,
Cruz leads tbe club in runs batted
witb 34, But tbe story on tbis
team, say Baca and Jimenez, are
Davis and Lowe,
"A lot of pitcbers are coming
from New Zealand, but there are
only a few that'll get you some-
wbere:' said Jimenez, "We bave
two of the best rigbt now,"
"Tbe players feel real confi-
dent bebind the pitcbers we do
have," said Baca,
"Everyone's pretty excited
about the way things are going:'
Aid Davis, "It (the team) runs pret-
ty confident wltb guys wbo've
Dever felt like that before,"
Tbe presence of Da vis and
Lowe are part of a trend among
United States fastpltcb softball
teams to Import pitcbers from
New Zealand, where kids start
tbrowing in fast pitch as early as
age 7, Americans, who often are
scbooled in bardball, don't get
into softball until their late teens
or early 20's,
Here the New Zealand pitch,
ers, witb their veteran skills. can
command high salaries, Jimenez
noted a pitcber in Lancaster who
"earns ~,OOO a year, , , just sits in
an office working a little calcula,
tor,"
"The money gets the pitching,"
Jimenez added, "Tbat's where it
starts, If we could get a good spon'
sor ' , , we could be one of the to~
competitors in the nation, We're
rated 20th in the country right
now,"
Lite beer basically puts up
money for the team to bold a
fund-raising tournament, Thl'
club must raise tbe rest,
Lowe and Davis, tbe Stars'
aces, were guaranteed transporta'
tion from tbeir bomeland. a job,
transportation in the States and
bousing,
"Tbat's quite enough," said
Lowe, wbo's in bis second \'ear
playing for tbe Stars, "Vou've got
to start somewbere, I'm quite bap,
py with tbe way tbings are going,"
Having another quality' pitcher
like Davis around bas belped
Lowe,
"It's wbat I call bealthy compo,
tition witbin the team, If you'vo
got someone to compare youself
with on the team. it belps you do
better, I'm sure Glenn feels the
same way,"
Shortstop Paul Iverson, who
joined tbe Stars tbis year, bi>
belped as mucb as tbe pitcbers in
his own way,
"He's the catalvst wbo turnt'd
our wbole ballchib around this
year," Aid Baca, "We needed a
quality sbortstop, He not only pro,
vided defense, be provided of,
fense as well,"
All the Stars need now to equal
the level of success tbey attained
in 1984 Is to reacb the ISC and
ASA tourneys,
To qualify for the ISC event,
tbe Stars must win a State tourna,
ment being beld July 19-21 at Jot'
Rogers Park in Long Beacb, To
reacb the ASA event, they could
eitber win a Pacific Regional tour,
ney, scbeduled July 13 at their
borne field, Encanto Field in Sa"
Bernardino, or win a state tourna,
ment in Lakewood on July 14,
