Schuma, Planning Director SUBJECT: Farmer's Market DATE: COPIES: June 13, 1985 (6374) ------------------------------------------------------------- . '--. The manager of Inland Center Mall has requested permission to relocate the Inland Certified Farmer's Market from its current location at Arrowhead Bowling Lanes parking lot to the parking lot of Inland Center Mall, beginning July 18, 1985. The Mayor and Council, at their July 9, 1984 meeting, approved the Farmer's Market at the Arrowhead Lanes Bowling Alley for a period of 60 days to allow sufficient time for review and comment in. order to determine compatibility with the surrounding area. Unfortunately, the Market ceased operation during the 60-day period and no report was trans- mitted to the Mayor and Council. In discussing the proposal with representatives of the mall, the City has been assured that they will adequately police the operation to insure proper clean-up and policing of the installation of any temporary signs. The area proposed is located at the northeast corner of the Inland Center Mall parking lot and is currently striped for approximately 300 vehicles and is a fairly substantial distance from the Sears tires, batteries and accessories outlet. The size appears to be reasonable, since it does have adequate exposure from both Inland Center Drive and from Inland Center Mall -and provides adequate off-street parking for both the sellers and the buyers within the market and should not interfere with on-site traffic circulation. It would be our recommendation that the Inland Certified Farmer's Market be granted permission to relocate the opera- tion to the Inland Center Mall parking lot on a trial basis for a time period not to exceed 90 days. During the 90 day time period, staff can evaluate the operation and can provide further guidance to the Mayor and Council. FRANK A. SCHUMA Planning Director mkf . .. ..... . ~"""E E. BROWN. D Street San Bernardino, Califorina 92418 WASHINGTON OFFICE May 31, 1985 Dear Mayor Wilcox: I am writing in support of the Inland Certified Farmers Market Committee's request for approval of relocating the San Bernardino market at the Inland Center Mall, beginning about the end of June. I believe the shopping center is an ideal location, in that it attracts people from many different areas and from all income groups. Furthermore, it is on major streets where adequate foot and automobile traffic should provide the volume of consumers needed to make the market a success. As you know, several small farmers in our area rely on farmers markets to provide them with direct marketing op- portunities. I have long been an advocate of farmers markets, for their contribution to sustaining small farms, for the variety of fresh, low-cost produce they provide shoppers and for the sense of community they give to cities. I am pleases that the San Bernardino City Council and Board of Supervisors have shown their support for Inland Farmers Markets. Also,l'm grateful to the San Bernardino Chamber of Commerce and the Inland Dietetic Association as sponsors of the markets who have assisted and supported the Inland Farmers Market Committee's efforts. Your favorable action in considering the request to relocate the market at the Inland Center Mall will be greatly ap- preciated. Should you need further information, please get in touch with my Colton of ceo Brown, Jr. Congress GEB:css THIS STATIONERY PRINTED ON PAPER MADE WITH RECYCLED FIBERS l..~! ....-. I April 9, 1985 Inland Center Mall Rose Morinello 500 Inland Center Drive San Bernardino, CA 92408 Dear Rose: On behalf of the San Bernardino Area Chamber of Commerce, we appreciate your consideration to providing a home for the Farmers' Market. The Farmers' Market provides an appropriate setting for the farmers to display and sell their fresh produce and for the consumer to receive the benefit of buying directly from the source without the so called "middle man". We are excited over the potential of seeing some dramatic growth in the San Bernardino Farmers' market as a result of this change of location. Sincerely, &~OOD Executive Vice president D7 FM
