Mount Vernon Avenue), Following that meeting the Mayor's Office forwarded recommendations to the Library Board of Trustees including: A community based citizens committee be convened to to work closely ~ith the Library Board and staff The redefinition of the Villasenor Library mission The continued coordination of the Library's programs with neighborhood businesses and residents, The provision of staff assistance to the citizens' committee in its Kork The_provision of funds sufficient to the committee's need and desire to visit library centers in other cities whose client population requires similar spec' ialized library services, in particular, the Latin Ame.rican Library in Oakland, california The following progress has been made as'a re~ult of these recommendations: Approximately two dozen public spirited individuals have formed the Villasenor Library Task Force under the direc. tion of George Martinez, the most recent appointee to the Library Board The Task Force includes representatives from area businesses, schools, community based organizations, service clubs, library staff, senior citizens, present and former library board mem- bers and others, The Task Force has already held three meetings and subdivided itself into committees to explore Cultural and Special Events, Public Information, Educational Programs, and Budget/Staff/ Friends Of The Library. On June 24, the Ethnic Services Consultant with the California State Library will spend the entire day with the San Bernardino Public Library system. On June 21, approximately ten representatives of the Task Force will visit the South Gate Branch and the East Los Angeles Reg- ional Branch (including the Chicano Resources Center) of the Los Angeles County Library system, On June 29, library staff and representatives of each of the subcommittees Idll visit the Latin American Library in Oakland, and staff will visit Hispanic library service centers in San Jose, Redwood City, and Alameda County in conjunction with this date. The Villasenor Library Task Force has set the July 11, meeting of the Library Board of Trustees as the target date for completing their ini- tial findings and recommendations. The Library Board requests your authorization for the use of existing funds within the FY1984.1985 Library budget to provide for the visits to the identified Hispanic library service centers.
