Cl'rO OF SAN BERNARDIa> .. REQUOT FOR COUNCIL AOION
STAFF REPORT
Request the City Council to grant the authority to the Public
Services Department to contract for emergency weed abatement
on improved parcels which cannot be disced where weeds have
become or will become fire hazards. The Fire Department has
identified 230 vacant and 275 occupied 'parcels which have
weed growth that cannot be abated through discing. During
the hot weather, the weed growth will turn brown and become a
serious fire hazard, blight and rodent problem.
The City forces are not adequate to handle all parcels in a
timely manner. There are many independent contractors who
have pickups and small equipment and can solve our problem on
a timely basis. Therefore, it is requested that the Public
Services Superintendent be authorized to contract where
necessary with these independent contractors a price per
parcel not to exceed the cost of abatement by City forces
(normally, $200-300 per parcel). All work to be performed
will be placed as a lien on the property tax bill.
