TROLLY BUSES - A full briefing was provided by Councilman Quiel regarding the Chance, Kansas built, 214 horsepower, $130,000 bus trolleys of the VIA System presently in use in San Antonio. San Antonio's 20-'bus, self-supporting, all-weather, 5-city route system is considered highly successful. In operation since 1983, each route is two miles long, operates at most opportune times in the downtown area and buses can be chartered for special events. Top speed on the bus chassis trolley is 60 mph. Maintenance is minimal with a probable cost to operate at $.50 per mile. Drivers rotate every two hours and there is no lack of volunteers for the city routes. The system was initially federally funded. The consensus was that this system could be applied to San Bernardino in conjunction with employee parking outside of the central city. The buses would transport employees from 7 to 9 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m. The buses would be available for designated route service with l5-minute intervals at each bus stop. The recommendation was that this item be continued and pursued for possible implementation in San Bernardino. Meeting adjourned.
