Ul , 1 . CI~ OF SAN BERNARDgO - REQU"T FOR COUNCIL ~ON STAFF REPORT A request for a Sister City affiliation in Israel was made years ago by citizens in our community. The City of Herzliya, Israel, has requested that we become Sister Cities and our Mayor has been in correspondence with the Mayor of Herzliya to this effect. A Citizen's Committee has been formed to serve as the San Bernardino/ Herzliya Sister City Committee, The Executive Board is as follows: Irmi Blum, Chairman Frances Grice, Vice Chairman Dr. Stanley Samuels, Secretary George Webster, Treasurer Eleanor Isenberg, Historian Representing the Mayor of the City of Herzliya at this Council Meeting will be Rabbi Jacob Alkow, who has been residing in Herzliya for some years. Incidentally, Rabbi Alkow was San Bernardino's first rabbi in the 1930' s. Copies of this Resolution will be sent to the Mayor and Council of the City of Herzliya, Israel, and to the Sister City Association of the United States and the Embassy of Israel, in Washington, D.C. 75.0264 o o o o HISTORY OF HERZLIYA, ISRAEL Herz1iya lies less than 10 kilometers to the north of Tel Aviv and was established in 1924, with plans for four adjacent zones: Mediterranean town; industrial zone; resort center, farming village. Herz1iya, with its magnificent beaches and pleasant climate has made it one of Israel's outstanding sunvner resort areas. Its industrial zone has major transportation links to the railroad, highways and airport facilities. ' The history of Herz1iya starts with the Cananite Period and recent archeological excavations brought remains of a Phoenician Village from the 6th Century. J o o o RESOLUTION NO. RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND COMMON COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO TO THE CITY OF HERZLIYA. ISRAEL. CONFIRMING THE SISTER CITY AFFILIATION BETWEEN THE TWO CITIES. WHEREAS. the people-to-peop1e program was inaugurated by President Dwight Eisenhower in 1956 to establish greater friendship and understanding between the people of the United States and other nations of the world; and WHEREAS. all succeeding United States Presidents have endorsed this program as Honorary Chairmen for the purpose of encouraging the exchange of ideas and cultures of the people of the United States and other nations; and WHEREAS. the City of San Bernardino. through its Mayor and Council. recognizes and endorses this program with the hope that it will lead to a lasting friendship between the people of Herz1iya. Israel. and San Bernardino. California. NOW, THEREFORE. BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND COMMON COUNCIL. CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO. AS FOLLOWS: SECTIO~ I: That this Council. on behalf of the people of San Bernardino. does hereby welcome the government and the people of the City of lIerzliya. Israel, to participate with San Bernardino as its Sister City for the purpose of creating greater mutual understanding between the peoples of our two great cities and nations. SECTION II: The Mayor is hereby iuthorized to ,act as official representative of the City of San Bernardino to carry out this program. SECTION III: Copies of this Resolution are to be sent to the Mayor and Council of the City of Herz1iya. Israel. to the Sister City Association of the United States and the Embassy of Israel. in Washington.
