The group of 8 kids ranging in age from 10 through 15 years old spent about 1.5 hours at the shelter. They learned about the Department, the work we do in the community and how the grant funding from the tribe has helped our residents and their pets. The group was able to create enrichment items for the cats and toured the shelter after a brief presentation. If you have a group that would like to learn more about the Department and our services, please reach out to us to schedule a meeting and tour. CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO ANIMAL SERVICES MEMORANDUM TO: Animal Control Commissioners FROM: Kris Watson, Animal Services Director SUBJECT: UC Davis Grant DATE: April 14, 2022 On March 30, 2022, the Department was notified about a grant award. The grant award is $5,000 and is from UC Davis "California for All Animals!" initiative. We are planning on utilizing the funds to reward positive behaviors of the available dogs at the shelter. We will be purchasing treat cups and treats to hang on the exterior of the dog kennels. Staff, volunteers and visitors can offer the dogs in the kennel a treat if they sit quietly in the kennel for them. This type of training has helped other shelters reduce barrier reactivity and barking at visitors in their dog populations. The dogs quickly catch on that "sit" means a treat. The improved behavior leads to increased adoption opportunities for the dogs.
