I encourage the Mayor and City Council to direct to staff continue to
explore whether ranked choice voting (RCV) is viable for the City of San
Bernardino.
>> RCV has the potential to broaden the number of candidates seeking
public office.
>> RCV can eliminate the financial burden (and potential corrupting
influence of campaign donors) on a candidate seeking office.
>> RCV can eliminate the possibility of a candidate having to fund
several election campaigns (for preliminary, general and possibly runoff
elections) for a single office.
>> A RCV system has the potential to encourage more citizens with a
grass-roots following to consider running for public office, but who are
not affiliated with established local political organizations or do not have
broad public policy experience.
I also encourage the Mayor and City Council to engage the County of
San Bernardino’s Registrar of Voters in discussions and studies to
consider whether a switch to RCV is viable for communities in the
County desiring to make this change.
Respectfully,
Mark Adelson
