Dear San Bernardino City Council,
On behalf of the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services (CalOES), I would like
to briefly talk to you about the Earthquake Early Warning System we have here in California
and the importance of San Bernardino residents downloading the MyShake App.
With the ever-present danger of earthquakes, California has developed the nation's first
statewide earthquake warning system through the MyShake App and ground-motion sensors
that can detect earthquakes. The MyShake App was developed by the UC Berkeley
Seismology Lab and gives users crucial seconds of warning before an earthquake strikes to
provide them with the sufficient time to drop, cover, and hold on. During the latest 6.4
earthquake in Humboldt County in December and the 5.1 earthquake in San José in
September, the MyShake App was extremely successful in alerting millions of people and
gave warnings up to 100 seconds before the earthquake struck. After an earthquake, users can
also report the shaking they felt on the app and if they experienced any damages The MyShake
App is free to download on both iPhones and Androids and is available in Spanish. We urge
you to share this crucial information with your communities, so that they can be better
prepared for an earthquake.
