Good afternoon to my brothers and sisters, and esteemed members of our council! My name is Christian Thomas Shaughnessy and I am writing this letter with regards to the current plans to evict the residents of 340 West 4th Street. At a time when housing is so expensive, and our wages as working folks so pitiful in comparison to the cost of living, it is vital we allow the adequate amount of time for our residents find new housing. As has been stated by the two candidates in the Mayoral race many times over, our shelters are either full or unsafe for many houseless people, especially the ones with families. As such, we must be mindful of the context behind many San Bernardino resident's decisions to live at 340 West 4th Street. We must, with immense bravery and courage, examine all options we possess to give shelter and safety to our fellow residents. That includes ensuring that promised relocation assistance is actually granted, that ARPA funds are utilized, and that innovative and sorely needed solutions like community land trusts are enacted. When we are aware of just how much we can do, we become aware of what it is we must not do. Evicting our neighbors suffering under the same inflation and violence we all endure is precisely that. With solidarity and love for San Bernardino, and all God's children, Christian Shaughnessy
