I do not know if my preplanned remarks will be heard before or after any
report out on the early retirement of Chief McBride and the appointment
of David Green as Interim appointment as chief.
I received two calls late yesterday, informing me that Interim Police Chief
McBride had retired and the city was going to replace him with David
Green. Currently, David Green is the Interim Assistant Police Chief, which is
technically a temporary holding title name for that position. The reasons I
oppose the appointment of Mr. Green are; one is according to a public
statement made at a Westside Action Group meeting by former city
councilmember Rikke Van Johnson who served 12 years on the council, that
Green has a "reputation of shooting Black people".
I did check with Mr. Johnson and another former council member last night
to see if their statement or opinion of Mr. Green had changed and they said
it had not.
The other reason is, the abrupt retirement of McBride, which is in keeping
with the same way other chiefs before him have left the city. It is a system
of replacing yourself with your friend, who looks like them. This is the way
McBride got into the position.
Next, I did check with city hall to determine if it was true about Chief
McBride and them considering the appointment of Green as Interim chief
and it was true.
Having said all of that, I wish Chief McBride a happy retirement life and
request of you council and city manager to appoint any one of your other
captains as interim police chief but not Mr. Green. I think it would be
irresponsible on your part to do so under the current national racial climate
and the need for a diverse and inclusive staff.
There are some other important issues on your agenda but time does not
permit me to comment on them. Please Stay Safe and have a wonderful
meeting. Hardy Brown, Chair of the NAACP Legal Redress Committee and
retired Publisher of Black Voice News.
