Good evening City Council, My name is Xavina Walbert. I was born and raised in San Bernardino and I love my city. I am a proud half white, half Mexican Chicana and will be the first of my parents to graduate from college. I will be graduating as part of the University of Redland's Class of 2023 with a major in Public Policy, concentrating in Environmental Studies, and a double minor in Spanish and Economics, perhaps triple minoring in Spatial Studies. Given all of my potential as a young adult in San Bernardino pursuing higher education and such, it concerns, frustrates, and saddens me that many Youth see their main option of providing for themselves and their family financially through warehouses. While I understand that warehouses do not require much in terms of experience and so forth, the Youth and residents of San Bernardino deserve better than to have most of their 'highest-paying' jobs be warehouse jobs! Too many hardworking Youth and adults are slaving away with physically- demanding, repetitive labour at these warehouses jobs that will only suck them dry, throw them away, and replace them at the drop of a coin, especially once automation takes over. These hardworking individuals, many of which are BIPOC, as well as immigrants who came to the US seeking better for themselves and their families, deserve so much more than to pour their blood, sweat, and tears for the survival of their families into warehouse jobs that, again, will replace them at the drop of coin and are actually harming them in a multitude of ways. Equally as important, if not more important, the Youth of San Bernardino deserve a city that recognizes their potential and nourishes it with an abundance of career development and expansion opportunities. San Bernardino deserves to Thrive, not Survive! Please vote 'yes' on a Warehouse Moratorium to put a pause on logistics development to better evaluate our community needs. For the sake of our health, air, and quality of life, San Bernardino needs a warehouse moratorium now!
