Comments Mayor and Council, Now is the time to ban personal fireworks starting in 2022.
The threat of fire and public safety has reached a point which can no longer be accepted by the
residents of the city. The city's confusing ban of fireworks above 30th street is neither well
understood, followed, or enforceable. Recent events attributed to fireworks include a fire on
Little Mountain, three children who suffered serious injuries, an explosion in Ontario which
devastated a neighborhood, and a structure fire. The uncontrolled explosions are traumatic to
pets and result in countless missing animals every year. Fireworks are best left to professionals
in controlled displays. The risks far outweigh the marginal gains received by non-profit groups
selling fireworks. And the confusing patchwork of laws is difficult for the public to understand
and comply. "Safe and sane" has proven itself to be a failed policy. Now is the time to take
action to prevent another year of severe risk to the residents of San Bernardino. I am calling on
you to ban all personal fireworks starting in 2022. Joel Rothschild San Bernardino
