I have lived in the city since 1993 and teach at Cal State. I am writing to encourage Council people: Shorette, Sanchez, and Figueroa to vote against the authorization to allow concrete to be crushed onsite. Several of my family members have asthma and we are no longer able to take walks along Palm Avenue during windy days due to dust and debris being blown in our neighborhoods. As a tax payers and residents of San Bernardino it is the responsibility of the City Council and Mayor to keep our neighborhoods safe and provide a clean environment that will enable our families to thrive. There are two elementary schools and one middle school in this area and once schools are in session this will have an adverse impact on children. The north end of San Bernardino experiences strong winds about 7 months out of year. Grinding the contaminated concrete at the North Palm Avenue location will affect the health and well being of the neighborhoods in North San Bernardino, and the silica and dust produced by the grinding will be blown to other parts of the city as well. The tons of toxic concrete that have been buried will result in contaminating the water table as well as the reservoir, that is about 2000 feet away from the pile of debris. The City should have never approved the dumping of toxic materials and concrete in San Bemardio from the Amazon warehouse that burned down in Redlands. Since the out of town developer refuses to remove the concrete, I urge the City Council to approve the $2 million, and subsequently take legal action to recoup the money from the parties involved in this whole mess. San Bernardino should not be for sale to the highest bidder. Our City should not be a dumping ground for nearby cities such as Redlands that would never have allowed their city to be used as a dumping ground for toxic materials and waste. City Council and Mayor: you can do better, your constituents' health and well-being should be your priority.
