Dear San Bernardino City Council Members, I am writing you as a resident of the 3rd ward of San Bernardino as well as an employee of both higher education institutions, CSUSB and SBVC, in San Bernardino. I was made aware of the upcoming decision regarding the Carousel Mall property thanks to the countless activist groups that are consistently working to save the soul of this city even when its Mayor and most City Council members are ready to sell that soul to the highest, out of town, bidder. These groups are made up of members of our community, so they know what is at stake. They understand that there are people here who just want a nice place to raise their families and that San Bernardino is a place with a lot of potential that many of you seem to forget exists. So, as a member of the community, I ask that you use the space, that was once a place for families to gather and shop with other members of our community, as a space which will benefit our community. The proposals that are being presented do not have us mind. You have a responsibility to ensure that this public land is utilized for public good which means that it should be a place which serves the people who voted for you. Instead of considering these proposals, you should be thinking about what you can do to better the community you serve. The Carousel Mall space, like San Bernardino, has so much potential. This can be a space which guarantees good jobs, affordable housing, and environmental sustainability. As a resident of the 3rd ward, I am asking that you consider the following in your decision making: -The assurance that a Community Benefits Agreement is signed before signing the contract to move forward with the project's development. -This development needs to be a place that locals can afford to invest in, whether that be as a business or as housing. -Arts and culture need to be present. If possible, subsidized housing for an artist colony should be included. -There needs to be more consideration regarding ground and air traffic around the site. and -You should ensure that those most affected by the construction and pushed out by the noise, pollution and property taxes are given first opportunity to purchase homes in the new development. Thank you for your time, Joanna Clevenger
