Hello my name is Jennifer Cheek, I am a public sector employee and a resident in
the county of San Bernardino.
My contact today is regarding the Carousel Mall development and the lack of
community involvement allowed.
My fellow community members and myself deserve a voice as well as a seat at the
table. It is beyond concerning that the community members are not being allowed
an opportunity to participate in the future development choices that will certainly
affect the futures of so many who live, reside or work within the area.
All members of this community deserve to navigate the priorities as well as many potential
impacts from the downtown development, including discussing issues like lack of
affordable housing, housing for low income or homeless residents, sustainability, and good
jobs. New developments need to be held accountable to our community, not just in zoning
or the building of a business but with all impacts both financial and non financial. We
deserve good development that will work together with our community members for a
brighter future, including clean air, clean groundwater, safe streets, living wages as well as
safe jobs for all of our community members and businesses alike. A community benefits
agreement included with a development plan from the beginning would ensure an alliance
between developers, the community, the local municipalities as well as other private
businesses and public agencies.
I ask that you not only show your support for a community benefits agreement to address
the issues I mentioned above, but that a community benefits agreement be required to be
included with this and any future development agreements. The city's public funds must go
into solving the crisis of unemployment, housing, air pollution, and be invested into
resources the community has needed for decades.
Let's work together and build a better future for everyone.
Sincerely
Jennifer Cheek
