COMMISSIONER/STAFF ANNOUNCEMENTS
APPROVAL OF MINUTES:
A motion was made by Gil Botello to approve the Minutes of April 11, 2017. The
motion was seconded by Bronica Taylor. The Motion passed.
GUEST SPEAKERS:
Gary Saenz spoke about a wonderful Theater production that took place last week at
the refurbished SBVC Auditorium called, “A New Day.” The play was written by the
Theater students based upon interviews that they conducted on campus regarding what
life is like in San Bernardino. Mr. Saenz first attended because his son Aaron is one of
the actors involved in the production but kept going back with others because it was
such a great show. He felt it wasn’t as well attended as it could have been.
The commissioners expressed an interest in hearing more about the production, if it’s
possible for the instructor to come and talk to them at the next meeting that would be
wonderful.
Erin Brinker has a company that works to strengthen non-profits doing strategic
planning retreats. She has been working with non-profits for about 15 years. She said
that where there is support for the Arts in a city and the Arts are thriving, the quality of
life for everyone in the city is much better; and can play a huge part in attracting
upwardly mobile, educated people to live in a city.
She stated that the Arts can be a real vehicle for renewal and it’s certainly possible to
attract funding by developing a plan that’s cohesive and aligned with the goals of the
City and the School District, etc. She is willing to facilitate a workshop for free for the
FAC to work on determining priorities and developing such a plan.
