HomeMy WebLinkAboutHardy Brown - City Ordinance Establishing a $300 Limit to CampaignHardy Brown, Publisher Emeritus Aug 5, 2020 Campaign Contribution Limit’s To the mayor and council, at your last meeting I shared with you in writing, my idea for you to pass a campaign limit ordinance and I see you are at least going to study the idea. You have on the agenda for today Aug 5th to study an ordinance to set a limit on campaign contributions to elected officials seeking office. This is a good thing but only if you include Political Action Committees or any invested groups including individuals This is some language I am suggesting: “You should pass an ordinance establishing a $300 maximum of which any individual, business firm, political action committee or any vested group may contribute to a Candidate for city office or a City adopted Measure that would increase or decrease taxes in San Bernardino Municipal Government during any Calendar Year. This ordinance should take effect 30 days after you approve it”. Currently we are open to a wild, wild west type contest with those who have deep pockets that can out spend any citizens ability to compete in fund raising to support or not support a candidate or city Measure. For example; If 50 police officers contribute $250 to the Police Officers PAC they would have $12,500 in one day to support or defeat a candidate or city measure, which they have done in past elections. If 100 officers gave $250 it would be $25,000 and 93% of them live outside of the city and pay no taxes to keep the city operating. Thank you; Hardy Brown
