Esteemed Council Members,
What we need in our community is to invest money on education, and extra curricular activities at schools. Rather
than increasing the funding for police departments, funds could also be diverted to emergency services that aren't the
police. In Seattle, the Homeless Outreach Stabilization and Transition (HOST) program at the Downtown
Emergency Service Center (DESC), employs social workers that are trained to deal with people that may be
distressed. The police are not equipped with the requisite knowledge nor training to handle crises of mental health,
or domestic violence disputes without resorting to violence. A better option would be to fund and bring awareness to
alternative emergency services that are not the police. At the very least consider these options.
