HomeMy WebLinkAboutPD.Presentation 2020 Fireworks Efforts & ResultsSan Bernardino Police Department 2020 Fireworks Review Eric McBride, Interim Chief of Police Fireworks Complaints •Many cities across the nation, including San Bernardino, Experienced increases in firework related activity this year. •Like many other cities, San Bernardino’s firework problem started earlier in the year and continued through the 4th of July. •This resulted in more calls for service than prior years, both in the weeks leading up to the 4th of July, and on the holiday itself. How We Responded •Fine increases for ACPs were approved in an effort to deter illegal fireworks activity. •A team was established using officers from various assignments to focus on fireworks issues. This team was designated as the Fireworks Enforcement Detail. •The Fireworks Enforcement Detail operated from June 18th through July 5th Enforcement Tactics •Uniformed officers were paired into teams to respond to fireworks related calls for service or community complaints. •Spotter teams, consisting of plain clothes and uniformed officers, were used to conduct proactive enforcement. •San Bernardino County Fire personnel rode along with officers in the field to assist with enforcement efforts. •Undercover teams monitored social media and online sales platforms to conduct buy/bust programs •Staff also conducted citizen call backs. History of Fireworks Activity •Overall, the Police Department received almost 2,400 fireworks related calls for service this year. •This represented a 158% increase over the number of calls received in 2019. •346 of those calls for service were received on the 4th of July and this was a 9.5 % increase over 2019.
