Public Comment by Dorothy Garcia, resident of San Bernardino
This is in regard to Item #2 on your agenda
San Bernardino County, as required by the State because of the COVID-19
emergency, has been securing hotel and motel lodging in the County to provide
individual room sheltering for certain populations such as homeless individuals
over 65, non-symptomatic , more susceptible persons, while other rooms are
being reserved for those who are COVID-10 positive while they recover, and for
essential County employees.
When you discussed this request from the County at a previous meeting, you
expressed concern that homeless persons from throughout the County would be
housed in the city of San Bernardino (and Victorville).
According to the agenda of the San Bernardino County Board of Supervisors of
yesterday, that concern is not justified.
The following hotels/motels in the following cities are identified as entering into
contracts with the County for the amount dog money indicated:
Ayres in Chino Hills for April 14-June 14, $1,004,400
Ayres in Redlands, for April 20-July 20, $908,500
Ayres in Barstow, for April 30-July 20, $1,350,100
The cities in which these hotels/motels are located will receive
transiency/occupancy tax money from those hotels. The City of San Bernardino
should not again turn down an opportunity to receive some of the tax money
available because of this program for serving the homeless and others affected by
Covid-19. And by the way, San Bernardino, as the County seat, also needs to
show concern for those affected by this virus.
You have a tentative agreement prepared by staff, which lays out necessary
restrictions.
I urge you to approve the agreement with the County for temporary emergency
lodging for individuals at risk and for essential County employees.
