2017-18 GRANTS FINAL REPORT 10+a JUL 31 PH 5: 09
Dear Grantees:
Your organization received a grant from the City of San Bernardino Fine Arts Commission to be used between July 1,
2017 and June 30, 2018. Although the Fine Arts Commission has been dissolved, it was very important to the former
Commissioners to work to ensure the continued funding of Arts Organizations within our community. One of their final
requests as a Commission was that the City Clerk's Office follow through with the evaluation process and forward the
results to the new Fine Arts and Historical Preservation Commission, in the hopes that the new commission would see
the effectiveness of awarding grants to arts organizations and continue to lobby for and give funding to such Arts
Organizations in San Bernardino.
Please fill in the form below. Return by Monday, July 30, 2018 to:
City of San Bernardino
Office of the City Clerk — Attention: Diane Grant
290 N. "D" St., San Bernardino, CA 92401
Please Note: Many of the former Fine Arts Commissioners expressed an interest in serving on the new
commission and if appointed will be looking for these evaluations to help in creating any processes the new
commission uses to fund grants for organizations if they receive funding through the general budget to do so.
The future availability of funding and the processes used to choose the organizations to be funded may depend
on the ability of the new commission to access the information you provide.

The San Bernardino Fine Arts Commission Grant was and continues to be critically
important to the success of the Youth Academy's music education program and its ability
to offer youth this life -changing opportunity. It provided a much needed source of funding
to assist with the basic operational expenses and the salaries for the high caliber
instructors. The Academy was recognized and filmed as a documentary by SBVC PBS
station - made possible by the support by the Fine Arts Commission Grant.
8. What impact (if any) has your project had locally?
The Academy had the greatest impact on the students, their education, and was
culturally enriching. At all levels of instruction, from beginning to performing, they learned
and advanced in music theory, music reading, mariachi history and playing their
instruments. Moreover, they learned important life -skills such as discipline, goal -setting,

10. Were the aims of your project achieved? What aspects went especially well, or not so well?
The goal -3 classes, beginning, intermediate, and advanced for 46 weeks, serving 88
students was achieved. The instruction continues to be excellent and students continue
to excel musically and academically. The Academy cultural experience has impacted
students such that they engage with other mariachi groups. The challenge of funding led
to new strategies that also included a significant increase in parent participation
11. Were there barriers to fulfilling your goals/aims?
While the most significant challenge to achieving the goals was the lack of arts funding,
new strategies and event opportunities were developed with the strong support of the
parents advisory group and parents. The Academy continued to reduce costs to the
extent possible while maintaining the high caliber of instruction. The budget constraints
affected the ability to present concerts due to associated high costs at venues, and a
delay of classes for a new cohort of students.
Please include the most recent financial report for your organization.
Please send photographs, programs or copies of press releases relating to your project.
