How important was the grant from SB Fine Arts Commission to the success of your project? The grant from the SB Fine Arts Commission has helped to fund full-scale operatic productions on the CSUSB campus and has also enabled us to bring opera to the students of the San Bernardino City Unified School District and to the greater communities of the Inland Empire. Due to this funding, the Opera Theatre has been able to costume shows, build original sets, incorporate innovative lighting and have a professional guest artists and designers work alongside our students. In addition, we have been able to bring in Grammy winning artists to perform with us on our CSUSB recital hall stage. One of the greatest rewards of the grant is the fact that we are able to bring opera into the community. The students that attend these performances and workshops are attentive and inspired when they watch our CSUSB students rehearse and perform; they are inquisitive and engaged and we believe that we are spreading our love for opera, theatre and music to many of those who have had little, if any, exposure to the arts. 8. What impact (if any) has your project had locally? The teachers and principals of the SBCUSD that have had us perform at their respective schools are supportive and genuinely delighted when the students of the CSUSB Opera Theatre visit their campuses. The SBCUSD students are respectful and engaged as we perform; it is thus our hope that our opera outreach activities will inspire these young students to have a love for the arts, either as future audience members or as artists themselves. In addition, we have been able to bring productions of a professional quality to the CSUSB campus and the City of San Bernardino communities. Our audiences have had the opportunity to see our CSUSB Opera Theatre students perform alongside professional dancers, conductor, guest artists, Emmy winning designers and Grammy nominated and/or winning orchestra members. It is also an invaluable experience for our CSUSB opera students; they have had the opportunity to learn and work with professionals who motivate and inspire them; this is apparent in their first-class performances, they are dedicated and proud and are acquiring a skill set that will prepare them for a professional career in the arts whether it be performance, education, design and/or administration. 9. Please fill in the items paid for and the expenditure figures for your project. FAC Grant Amount $ 10,000.00 Expenditures Musicians $1100.00 Costume Designer $3250.00 Set Designer and Materials $1430.00 Guest Artists $1000.00 Grand Rights Licensing/Part Rental $3000.00 Reception $220.00 TOTAL 10, 00 .00 Note: Total expended should equal the amount of the grant. 10. Were the aims of your project achieved? What aspects went especially well, or not so well? The aims of the project were indeed met — We presented a Holiday Gala concert featuring scenes from Irving Berlin's White Christmas and Menotti's Amahl and the Night Visitors costumed by Emmy winning designer Jacqueline Saint -Anne with lighting design by CSUSB student Raymond Jones. We completed five outreach performances in the community and performed/presented to approximately 400 secondary school students. Our winter faculty/student/guest artist production Miss Donnithorne's Maggot by Peter Maxwell Davies was a big success and featured some of the top musicians and artists in Southern California. We received a great deal of press through the CSUSB Office of Strategic Communications; they have played a vital role in publicizing the events for our CSUSB Opera Theatre events. The main stage Spring production of Einstein on the Beach by the iconic composer Philip Glass with libretto by the legendary Robert Wilson was a huge success and received significant publicity throughout the Inland Empire. This was the first time that the Grand Rights licensing of this particular opera had ever been granted to a college or university. The students performed alongside some of the top musicians, designers, dancers and artists in the Southern California area. Our students excelled in all aspects of the production: singing, acting, movement, lighting and backstage crew. 11. Were there barriers to fulfilling your goals/aims? I had great success working directly with the campus Office of Strategic Communications to publicize our Opera Theatre events; they have been supportive and have done a fantastic job featuring us in both significant press releases as well as on our homepage website. There have been three feature documentaries on the CSUSB Opera Theatre during this past season that have been aired on radio as well as online. Links to these broadcasts are included at the end of this report. It continues to be a challenge in coordinating our Outreach visits to the SBCUSD schools, simply due to their busy schedules and our availability. We have however remained true to our promise to bring opera to as many students of the SBCUSD as possible. We have also done additional outreach to the Riverside Unified School District and at CSU Fullerton. Please include the most recent financial report for your organization. Please send photographs, programs or copies of press releases relating to your project. If you submitted an interim report, it is not necessary to duplicate any of these materials.
