RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN
BERNARDINO, CALIFORNIA, ESTABLISHING THE CLASSIFICATION AND
APPROVING THE JOB DESCRIPTION FOR POOL MAINTENANCE
COORDINATOR
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY
OF SAN BERNARDINO AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The classification of Pool Maintenance Coordinator, Range 1408,
$3,397-$4,129 per month, is hereby established and the job description for said position,
attached hereto and incorporated herein as Exhibit "A", is hereby approved.
SECTION 2. The Director of Human Resources is authorized to update the City's
salary schedule to reflect these actions.
SECTION 3. Funding for the position is included in the FY 2017/18 Adopted

Pool Maintenance Coordinator
JOB SUMMARY:
Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine to semi -skilled work in pool
maintenance, with a strong emphasis on pool water sanitation and equipment operation,
requiring specialized knowledge and skills, including: installation, maintenance, modification and
repair work in assigned area of pool equipment, building repair, minor plumbing and electrical
repair; and perform related duties as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Pool Maintenance Coordinator is a journey -level classification in the Parks, Recreation and
Community Services Department. Incumbents require knowledge of the plumbing field and
knowledge of swimming pool chemical treatment and testing. It is distinguished from other
maintenance and repair classes by the specific knowledge of swimming pool chemistry, pool
equipment installation, maintenance and repair. Incumbents in this class require the ability to
work independently, exercising judgment and initiative.
This classification may assist other City Staff in the provision of related events and programs
relevant to park and pool facilities. Positions in this classification may lead and train personnel
and direct contractors in work performed relating to pool maintenance.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Maintains pool chemistry and circulation at proper levels.
2. Performs daily cleaning and sanitizing activities (pool vacuuming, tile/deck/floor power
washing, skimmer basket/strainer/deck debris removal, cleaning and disinfection of
pipes and valves).
3. Responsible for pool heater maintenance and operation.
4. Performs water tests, calibrates automation, and trains designated staff in procedures.
5. Checks pumps and motors for proper operation and conducts minor repairs.
6. Inspects and maintains chemical feed system; pool fittings, hardware, tubing, feeders;
storage tanks/systems; pool covers; waterslide.
7. Handles all pool chemicals safely and performs monthly facility safety inspections.
8. Coordinates the maintenance, renovation, construction, and inspection of City swimming
pools, waterslides, and spray systems.
9. Works closely with staff from Parks, Recreation, and Community Services and Facilities
Departments.
10. Establishes and coordinates an annual preventative maintenance program for the City's
pool facilities and equipment.
11. Provides initial response to calls for service from pool staff, assesses maintenance
needs, and takes corrective action or routes a work order to appropriate maintenance
team and/or commercial pool repair service contractor.

12. Serves as a technical advisor on the County Health Department Regulations and
requirements for public pools and advises Aquatics Supervisor and/or Community
Services Manager on required corrections.
13. Enforces all provisions of the State of California, Health and Safety Codes and California
Code of Regulations for Public Pools and Spas (Title 22 and 24) through ongoing
professional contacts with personnel from the County of San Bernardino Department of
Public Health, Division of Environmental Health Services.
14. Participates in the development of the operating and capital improvement budgets and
estimates material and labor cost figures for pool operation, construction, and
maintenance.
15. Maintains pool plans, technical specifications, and other maintenance or construction
history on all pools.
16. Serves as liaison between pool maintenance and pool recreation program and events
aquatic staff.
17. Orders supplies, conducts inventories, and maintains purchase records.
18. Maintains aquatic buildings to include general janitorial responsibilities for showers and
locker rooms.
19. Maintains aquatic grounds to include general maintenance, trash pickup, deck
maintenance, and power washing of buildings as necessary.
20. Demonstrates continuous effort to improve operations, decrease turnaround times,
streamline work processes, and work cooperatively and jointly to provide quality
customer service.
21. Submits annual Business Emergency/Contingency Plans for each public pool regarding
the use of hazardous materials handling, usage, generators, and storage through the
California Environmental Reporting System (CERS).
22. Assist other City staff in the provision of related events & programs relevant to park and
pool facilities.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge of:
1. Operation, repair, and maintenance of swimming pools, equipment, and facilities.
2. Hazards and safety precautions applicable to pool maintenance.
3. Chemical water treatment systems and pool water testing.
4. Current pool maintenance codes and regulations.
5. Purchasing practices and procedures common for municipal government.
6. Report writing and hard -copy and digital file management.
Ability to:
1. Maintain and safely operate a City -issued motor vehicle and keep a valid California
driver's license in good standing.
2. Work with chemicals or similar solutions such as liquid chlorine, muriatic acid, and soda
ash using personal protective equipment.
3. Perceive the full range of the color spectrum, such as when working with electrical wires
or water testing color comparators.
4. Communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing.
5. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City and County staff,
contractors, citizen groups, and the public.
6. Operate a computer and application software for maintenance and project management
programs.
7. Work safely without presenting a direct threat to self or others.

8. Climb ladders or steps, such as getting onto roofs and into sump pits.
9. Work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to outdoor elements.
10. Move objects weighing 50 pounds or more long distances (more than 20 feet).
11. Properly maintain and operate power driving construction tools and equipment.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education, Training and Experience:
A typical way of obtaining the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation
from high school or a G.E.D. equivalent; and at least three (3) years of progressively
responsible pool maintenance experience; or an equivalent combination of education,
training, and experience.
Licenses, Certificates; Special Requirements:
A valid California driver's license and the ability to maintain insurability under the City's
vehicle insurance policy.
Possession of a Certified Pool Operator Certification (CPO) or an Aquatic Facility Operator
(AFO) certificate and possession and maintenance of Adult CPR certification within 6
months of hire.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision,
peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The ability to swum with an
average level of safety is desirable.

appropriate safety apparel and equipment at all times.
