RESOLUTION NO. 2017-218
RESOLUTION OF THE MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN
BERNARDINO, CALIFORNIA, ESTABLISHING THE CLASSIFICATION AND
APPROVING THE JOB DESCRIPTION FOR CEMETERY CARETAKER
WHEREAS, Prior to the elimination of the classification in 2012, the responsibilities
of the maintenance of City owned Cemetery Pioneer Memorial was assigned to the park
maintenance workers; and
WHEREAS, It has been determined that it is necessary to establish and approve the
Cemetery Caretaker classification to fit the needs within the City.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MAYOR AND CITY
COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF SAN BERNARDINO AS FOLLOWS:
SECTION 1. The classification of Cemetery Caretaker, Range 1368, $2,782-$3,382
per month, is hereby established and the job description for said position, attached hereto and
incorporated herein as Exhibit "A," is hereby approved.
SECTION 2. The Director of Human Resources is authorized to update the City's
salary schedule to reflect these actions.
SECTION 3. The Director of Finance is authorized to amend the FY 2017/18 budget
to reflect these actions. Funding for the position is included in the FY 2017/18 Adopted

CEMETERY CARETAKER
JOB SUMMARY
Under supervision, performs a variety of routine to skilled tasks in the maintenance and
operations of the City's cemetery and related systems and facilities; and performs related duties
as assigned.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Cemetery Caretaker is an entry-level classification which under close supervision and direction
performs routine duties in the maintenance and upkeep of the City's cemetery. Positions at this
level receive specific instruction and/or assistance as new or unusual situations arise, and are
aware of the operating procedures and policies of the work unit.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may
be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude it from the
position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
1. Edges, fertilizes, mows, sods, seeds and waters lawns throughout cemetery grounds
including around grave markers, monuments, head stones, curbs and trees.
2. Cleans and maintains landscaped areas; picks up litter, garbage and debris.
3. Maintains, repairs, and installs automatic sprinkler systems and lines; Irrigates cemetery
grounds using automatic and manual systems.
4. Provides assistance to service attendants, mortuary directors, and families as needed;
acts as pall bearer if necessary.
5. Digs grave, installs grave marker and flora vases and may set up chairs.
6. Assists in preparing mausoleum and mausoleum crypts for service and performs basic
custodial work.
7. Operates light and heavy equipment including backhoe, riding mower, trench digger,
dump truck, and tractor.
8. Secures buildings, vehicles, and gates.
9. Assists and provides information to City residents
10. Performs a variety of complex and special projects as assigned.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
1. Practices, methods, tools, materials, and equipment used in cemetery and grounds
maintenance and operation work.
2. Pertinent Federal, state, and local laws, codes, and regulations.
3. Operating characteristics of and repair principles used on irrigation systems.
4. Watering requirements for lawns, trees, plants, and various types of soil preparation and
enrichment.

5. Occupational hazards and necessary precautions applicable to assigned work.
6. Use and maintenance of commonly used hand and power landscaping tools and
equipment.
7. Plant and animal pests that are harmful to plants.
8. Safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the work.
Ability to:
1. Perform cemetery maintenance, landscaping, reconstruction and repair work
independently.
2. Perform preventative maintenance on equipment and perform minor or routine
maintenance and repair of equipment.
3. Perform cemetery maintenance, landscaping, construction and repair work.
4. Read, interpret, and apply a wide variety of technical information from manuals,
drawings, specifications, layouts, blueprints, and schematics.
5. Follow oral and written instructions.
6. Exercise independent judgment and initiative within established guidelines.
7. Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City management, staff, the
public and other encountered in the course of work.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and
abilities to perform the essential job duties of the position is qualifying. Incumbents will possess
the most desirable combination of training, skills, and experience, as demonstrated by their past
and current employment.
Education, Training and Experience:
A typical way of obtaining- the knowledge, skills and abilities outlined above is graduation
from high school or G.E.D. equivalent and two (2) years of experience in grounds
maintenance and operations, preferably in a cemetery; or an equivalent combination of
training and experience.
Accreditation shall be by a national or regional accreditation body that is recognized by the
Secretary of the United States Department of Education.
Licenses; Certificates; Special Requirements:
Possession of a valid Class "C" California Driver's License is required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an
employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this class. Reasonable
