HomeMy WebLinkAbout04-11-2017 FAC Reg Mtg MinutesFINE ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES FOR TUESDAY, 04-11-2017 In Attendance: Commissioners: Chairperson Dorothy Garcia, Deborah Bunger, Joyce Seeger, Michael Segura, Barbara Babcock Arrived late: Gil Botello Absent: Bronica Taylor, Donna Howard Guests: Stephanie Sanchez, Executive Assistant to the Director of Community Development Mark Persico, Director of Community Development Meeting called to order by Chairperson Garcia on Tuesday, 04-11-2017 at 4:06 p.m. in the MIC Conference Room, 6th Floor of City Hall. COMMISSION ERISTAFF ANNOUNCEMENTS Rialto High School is presenting, "Swan Song," which is compiled of snippets of several different plays that Mary Bartlett, who is retiring this year has put together over the last 20 years. April 12, 13, 14 & 15 at 7:00 p.m. $7.00 per ticket There will be a fundraiser to complete the Rosa Parks Statue by Artist Patrick Jewett. The fundraiser will be held at the Garcia Center for the Arts on Sunday, April 30, 2017 from 2:00 p.m. — 4:00 p.m. and will cost $20 per person. Those interested should RSVP to Bronica Taylor by April 20, 2017. The San Bernardino Symphony Guild is giving an afternoon tea at the Garcia Center for the Arts on May 17 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to honor Mildred "Millie" McKim, for her decades of support. She is also a member of many other organizations. The cost is $40 per person. RSVP is necessary if you wish to go: 909-381-5388 by May 3, 2017. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A motion was made by Commissioner Bunger to approve the Minutes of March 07, 2017. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Segura. The Motion passed. A motion was made by Commissioner Segura to approve the Minutes of March 14, 2017. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Bunger. The Motion passed. Rosa Parks Statue Update — Although Commissioner Taylor was absent, she forwarded information regarding the fundraiser for the completion of the statue mentioned during the announcements. 2. Fish Eyes — The group seems to be looking in other directions for their performance and there does not seem to be any point in pursuing further contact. A motion was made by Commissioner Botello to cancel or end the Fine Arts Commission's relationship with the Heidi Duckler Dance Theatre/troupe with regard to the Fish Eyes project. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Bunger. The motion passed. 3. Haynes Parkl9th Street Opening — Saturday, May 13th There will be Arts groups (including from the Garcia Center for the Arts) present and everyone is welcome. NEW BUSINESS 1. A Budget Update was not available. 2. Recommendations for FAC grants— The Commission reviewed their decisions regarding recommending funding for the different applicants to make certain they were confident in the amounts they were going to take to the City Council. a. There were some concerns raised about possible repetition of the issues with the Parks, Recreation and Community Services funding. The commission would like to ask that it be made clear to the City Parks and Recreation and Community Services Department that they are not to draw funds directly from the Fine Arts Commission account and that the funding granted them is for ONE year ONLY. b. The Fine Arts Commission grants are not on the City Council Agenda as yet but the Commission is aiming for the Mayor and Common Council meeting of May 01, 2017. c. A motion was made by Commissioner Botello to amend the recommended funding amount for the Woodward Academy from $10,000.00 down to $5,000.00 and to increase the recommended funding amount to the Symphonie Jeunesse from $5,000.00 to $10,000.00. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Babcock. The motion passed. Page 2 Fine Arts Commission meeting of April 11, 2017. 3. Art Night Final Plans— Stephanie Sanchez and Mark Persico gave a quick review of the final plans for Art Night — which will take place Friday, April 21 and Saturday, April 22, including where advertising had been purchased. Commissioner Botello expressed disappointment that a greater percentage of the advertising money was not spent with local publications. Commissioner Segura motioned to request a copy of the budget and expenditures from the Art Night from Community Development. Commissioner Botello seconded the motion. The motion passed. PUBLIC COMMENTS: None ADJOURNMENT The meeting was adjourned by Chairperson Dorothy Garcia at 5:06 p.m. The next meeting for the Fine Arts Commission will be May 09, 2017 at 4:00 p.m. in the City Hall MIC Conference room on the 6th floor.
