without the generosity and belief in my work with young musicians in my
community without this wonderful opportunity from the San Bernardino
City Fine Arts Commission Granting Association.

10.) Were the aims of the project achieved? What aspects went well/not so well?
The aims of the project and design were achieved. (Please see First Review
Report, February 2017, included.) The first workshop provided valuable learning
tools for higher goals and achievements for the second workshop to be held in the
Spring 2017.
I was able to integrate additional work with mentors and professional coaches
for the workshop participants.
Additional' pieces of music were added and able to be perfor=med within the
eight-hour long workshop day.
I was able to implement additional activities of collaborative inclusion.
I was able to include a broader age -range of workshop participants because
programs in the public schools were established by this time of year, (Spring
2017), whereas the programs for elementary and middle school had not been
fully implemented in the Fall 2016 at the time of the first workshop.
11.) Were there barriers to fulfilling your goal/aims?
I feel as though I provided a valuable collaborative as well as an extensive
training session and heightened level of performance for all those who participated.
I guess my only lamentable disappointment would be that the music teachers in the
public schools don't necessarily see this as a valuable training for their own school
orchestras and promote it more extensively. I will suggest a "point" system for
students who attend the Fall 2017 workshop in hopes of a stronger workshop
attendance commitment and the ability to enhance and elevate the individual
orchestral programs at all levels in the public schools.
Thank you, members of the San Bernardino City Fine Arts Commission, for
allowing me this opportunity to serve and enhance the level of the training of young
string musicians in our community by a string professional. Thank you for believing in
my work in music with young musicians. I appreciate your support so much in
allowing me to move forward in the musical education of the youth in our community.
M st sincerely,
I C Cry--C 1 t fiY . ,—-

9.) Were the aims of the project achieved? What aspects went well/not so well?
For a first effort, the aims of the project and design were achieved.
Participants covered the desired age range, (11-16.)
Varying experience levels.
The chosen music was attainable, yet challenging for a performance by
the end of a one day workshop.
The participants were able to take home a folder full of new pieces.
The individual professional coaches were given blocks of time for
section work throughout the day to work on difficulties.
Participants sat alongside mentors and professionals for support.
Less experienced players received strong advice, instruction and
support.
Definitely provided confidence -building.
It was fun!
Each participant exited with a higher level of playing/performance
ability.
Participants learned new skills and techniques.
Participants were welcomed warmly and encouraged by mentors.
Extremely positive comments about workshop by:
participants
mentors
professional coaches
families of participants
SJO Board Members
Ouestions about when the next workshop would be scheduled.
Coaches wanting to be asked back.
Participants wanting to be invited again.
The only slightly disappointing aspect was the realization that most of the
elementary and middle school music programs were not set up and running by
September. There were not as many "names -as -participants" as might have been
expected. There were more High School participants than the lower age -range that
had been anticipated. By the Spring Workshop of 2017, when all programs are well
3—
under way, this should not be a problem. Perhaps if there is another opportunity next
year under a similar grant, and the Fall date is pushed back by a couple of weeks, more
students will be able to participate in both workshops.
