6. How much of your project was funded from other sources? Including ticket sales $47,997
7. How important was the grant from SB Fine Arts Commission to the success of your project?
The SB Fine Arts Commission grant was and continues to be critically important to the success of the Youth
Academy's high caliber music education program. The Academy provided musical instruction for 46 weeks; offering
4 class levels each day which consisted of beginning, intermediate, advanced, and performing. There were 90
students enrolled throughout the year.
The largest budget expense is the salaries for the highly qualified instructors, and the grant helped to mitigate
this expense. Though the Sinfonia board scaled back other expenses as much as possible, the instructors are the key
components to delivering a quality and effective program. In short, the SB Fine Arts Commission funds the most
important program expense.
8. What impact (if any) has your project had locally?
The Academy had the most impact on the Academy students who received a high quality and rigorous music
education. The students at all levels - beginning, intermediate, advanced, and performing - learned and advanced in
music theory, music reading, mariachi history, and performance skills appropriate to their instructional level, individual
aptitude and skills. Moreover, the students also learned and developed other important life skills such as goal setting,
discipline, and team work. The instructors and volunteers set a high bar for expectations and the student met them.
While we are proud of the program impact on students' music education, it is equally important to note that
instructors and volunteers continue to serve as role models to all students; while the more advanced students have
acted as role models and mentors to the younger students. The program has also positively impacted students'
academic performance, high school graduation, and college attendance. And in turn, the Academy students have had a
positive effect and influence with their siblings, friends, schools, and in their communities.
Lastly, the Academy community performances convey a positive and hopeful youth message that culture, music and
art continue to thrive and make a difference in the lives of San Bernardino residents.
9. Please fill in the items paid for and the expenditure figures for your project.
Items Spent for this item
Academy Instructor Salaries $14,000
Rental of Venue for Classes and Performances $5,000
Insurance, Admin Office and Professional Fees $5,000
TOTAL $24,000
Note: Total expended should equal the amount of the grant.
10. Were the aims of your project achieved? What aspects went especially well, or not so well?
The aims or goals of the project were achieved. A music education was provided to students on a weekly basis.
The goal of community concerts was also achieved by presenting concerts in a variety of venues throughout the year to
diverse audiences.
Overall, the operations and delivery of music education went very well. The instructors, board and volunteers
continue to refine and improve the program. Parent's involvement has increased in the form of a parent advisory group.
The biggest challenge continues to be fundraising though the board and the parents continue to be committed to raising
the needed funds.
11. Were there barriers to fulfilling your goals/aims?
The most pressing challenge is that the large grants that once provided core funding support are no longer
available as the funders have reduced grants, changed their focus areas, or are gone. The Academy has reduced costs to
the greatest extent possible to keep the program running. However, the Board continues to seek new strategies for
funding and grants.
Secondly, the Academy as part of the Sinfonia Mexicana is not able to present concerts at the California Theater
due to the high rent and associated expenses.
Please include the most recent financial report for your organization.
Please send photographs, programs or copies of press releases relating to your project. If you submitted an interim
report, it is not necessary to duplicate any of these materials.
