How important was the grant from SB Fine Arts Commission to the success of your project: This ttrant was EXTREMELY important to the success of our oroaram. Our reaular funding supported lust enough to execute the program on a small scale. Support from SB Fine Arts Commission enabled us to have talented/well-trained instructors to assist in executing the program, needed supplies, equipment, etc. It made for a more polished and professional program. which has played a huge part in the organizational growth during the past couple of Years. We were also able to reach 3-4 times more people than we could've reached without the commission's assistance! 8. What impact (if any) has your project had locally? UR has been able to consistently address needs of local San Bernardino organizations by #1. Offering arts programming to schools and community centers that serve at -risk youth. We've seen a lot of success with PAL Charter Academy where we've operated full-time and offered classes that enable their students to gain elective credit that goes toward graduation. Our classes are not only used to expose their students to the arts and build artists, but we also use them to mentor as well. Spoken word is used to productively and creatively enable them to express how th2y feel about situations going on in their lives and improve their writing skills. Film is used to allow them to tell their individual stories and how they have overcome obstacles in their lives as a way to heal and inspire others. Acting is used to work on building their self-confidence and public speaking skills. Dance activities are used to encourage h sical fitness. We even partner with the school in producinig student leadership, colle e education and work trainina programs/activities. Our arts classes compliment, support, and make academic programing more effective. #2. We've also been able to address the needs of local oritanizations through using our talented staff and students to help them produce creative marketing tools as a part of our classes/workshops. For example: ALL PAL Charter Academy promotional videos and most professional photos have been taken/created by UR Arts Academy personnel/students (as a part of our urogram) and are used for their website, YouTube channel, and social media pages to promote their school. Their school target San Bernardino teen dropouts to get them back into school and to graduation. WELCOME• PAL CHARTER ACADEMY ah}'HIGH SCHOOL f ome of tie suds! Were the aims of your project achieved? What aspects went particularly well, or not so well? Yes! The aims of our Droiects were achieved for the most Dart. UR Arts Academv. it's board of directors, and staff stayed consistent and true to what we said we would do in 2016-2017. The most successful part of the year (by far has to be the partnership we've had with PAL Charter Academy. We were able to offer our program to over two hundred high school age youth and their families on a regular basis (M -Th Sam -12n) through our workshop siclasses and 10-15 performed for audiences of 500+. Inspirational film projects were created and circulated through social media la ed on television and entered in film festivals. It has been an amazing year and can definitely say that we couldn't do without the support of The Fine Arts Commission. One area that didn't go as well as we had hoped was our partnership with San Bernardino Parks and Recreation. They originally were going to let us use The Hernandez Center as our headquarters but due to City Hall renovations they backed out of the arrangements we were making. They encouraged us to continue our classes at their centers. Although we did continue, the hours of operation at the site were inconsistent which impacted our classes. Sometimes we were able to have classes and other times we couldn't because the building was closed. The inconstancy was due to their staffing and crime/neighborhood issues._A couple of classes were actually cancelled due to a shooting in the area. Any time UR classes were scheduled, our instructors were there and ready to teach regardless. Lack of consistency when it came to building availability became a frustration with some of our program participants as well. It did affect the number of program participants. We suggested distributing fliers and even created them but they said the city had to create the flyers in order to be copied and distributed. We ave them a copy of our flyer with all of the class information. They said they were going to create the flyer that would be distributed but never did. Overall I feel like partnering with Parks and Recreation can be successful in the future with more effective communication. We plan to present our concerns to their director in_hopes of having a better experience this upcoming year. We're also leaning on putting our focus more so into partnering with the school district in the future. 11. Were there barriers to fulfilling your goals/aims The only barriers came in working with San Bernardino Parks and Recreation as mentioned above. It was disheartening because we were offering free services to their population of at -risk youth and we weren't utilized to our full capabilities. We didn't have that one Parks & Recreation representative there to assist make sure we had buildinjg access help with class promotion especially because they said we weren't able to create and distribute our own filers). I don't think it was intentional because they were really excited about bringing us in. There was'ust no one within the agency to oversee things and it got to the point were 95% of our calls and messages went unanswered. If possible, please send a photograph, a program or copies of press articles relating to your project. UR's Film & Drama students presented a short original skit (called "Faith") written and directed by UR's Instructor, Alex Avila. Subject matter deals with the frustration they feel as minority (African American Hispanic) youth in the community.... Not having the same opportunities and unfairlyjudged... It encourages other kids like them to Have Faith, unity, self-determination, and not to give up. They can be successful. The kids could relate to this skit and performed it 4 times at various venues within San Bernardino this year. Below watch them attempt the performance on film in this rough draft/practice video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KGO-9NDploE&t=34s The article below was printed in the Westside Story Newspaper and talks about the one a community Black History celebration. NEWSPAPER ARTICLE: WESTSIDE STORY NEWS PAL Scholars Honor Black History SAN BERNARDINO, CA- In a pair of unlikely events, PAL Scholars made history while honoring Black History. On Saturday, February 25, 2017, two teams comprised of eight students in total represented not only PAL Charter Academy High School but the entire city of San Bernardino as they competed in the African American History and Knowledge Bowl hosted by the Phi Rho chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Incorporated at the University of California Riverside. Embarking on uncharted territory, Coach Christopher Love was able to prepare PAL Students: Lizbeth Aleman, Danielle Colley, Kenyatta Deshozier, Michelle Estrada, Jesse Hamilton, Edward Orrego, Angelina Robles, and Shamiya Tucker for competition in the weeks leading up to this event. This was fun, we definitely will be ready next year" reported student participants Jesse Hamilton 66 and Shamiya Tucker. "These students have made us proud today as they competed with high school students from all over southern California. We banded together and made it happen. They have made me proud!" Coach Love added as he recapped the event. Unfortunately, neither of the PAL teams were crowned History experts on this day, but they have certainly laid the foundation to be a force to be reckoned with in next year's competition of this annual event. Equally as impressive was PAL Arts & Athletics uniting to support Cajon High School's BSU Inaugural Black History Celebration on Monday, February 27, 2017. The collaborative effort allowed PAL scholars to showcase their artistic ability amidst the crowd of over 100 spectators. PAL performed their hit skit, "Have Faith" which was written and directed by Mr. Alex Avila of Avila Production (AP). This powerful piece was back by popular demand and Lizbeth Aleman, Devyn Graves, Jesse Hamilton, Brent Matthews, and Edward Orrego offered yet another stellar performance. Coach Domonique White, PAL'; Athletic Director offered the following statement, "Faith was the culmination of the celebration of Black History. Our students were asked to do that which would stretch them from their comfort zone. They not only accepted the challenge but excelled in the opportunity and are eager to be challenged again. This has been a great way to conclude black history month at PAL." The Flash mob was invited by the office of City Councilmember Robert Jenkins to prove the need for the arts and encourage additional city-wide efforts to fund additional free after school programs to the city's youth. LJR Academy of Arts was founded by Lynnzora Rogers a few years ago, after she double majored and graduated with degrees in English and Theater from California State University, San Bernardino. Rogers volunteered for a few art programs in the area before deciding she wanted to dive into the world of non-profit organizations and extend a helping hand to youth turning to the streets. Joining Lynnzora in the cause was PAL Center Charter School. Most of PAL Center Charter School's students have been able to balance school with their choice of art expression because it allows them to express themselves, according to event organizers. With the persistence of Jacquelyn White, Program Manager, and I Principal Becky Sumbaro, PAL Center collaborated with Rogers and attended the council meeting to express their opinions and vocally support the arts. Arroyo Valley High School math teacher Lawrence Hardy attended with his Arroyo Valley Steppers Crew. Also in attendance was Lynnzora's mentor and LJR Advisor, CSUSB Theater Professor Kathy Ervin, who shared she has always encouraged the importance of the arts to her students. During the presentations the audience applauded the students for the montage of acts, which included participants like ballet dancers, step dancers, a gospel singer, Shakespearean acting and a rap performance by Torey Fugate. Rogers urged the council to remember how important the arts are and the good it does for the children in many different aspects, mainly, she said, "in contributing to children's intellectual awareness of their goals and surroundings, which results in mmLinn hci+cr lift rhnirac " UR Talks to Students about pursing a career in the arts and promoting the benefits of arts education at CSUSB I re will glad,v arrept all your toys f gifts cards for air ...
