BERNARDINO, CALIFORNIA, ESTABLISHING AND APPROVING THE
CLASSIFICATION AND JOB DESCRIPTION OF THE MAINTENANCE WORKER
III POSITION
'ffHEREAS, the City will be transferring management of the waste water collectioij
1i system from the Public Works Department to the Water Department as stipulated in the newly
adopted City Charter.
WHEREAS, establishing a Maintenance Worker III job classification will enable
stormwater system maintenance to shift to the City's street maintenance division of the Public

JOBSUMMARY I
Under general supervision, performs a variety of advanced skilled and semi-skilled work a.

basins, street signs and related public works facilities; operates a variety of light-, medium- an

heavy-duty motorized maintenance and construction equipment; and performs related duties a

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
Maintenance Worker III is the advanced journey -level class in the maintenance class series.
Under general supervision, incumbents perform a range of more difficult duties in the
maintenance, repair and clean-up of the City's streets, alleys, gutters, storm drains, catch
basins and other infrastructure. Maintenance Worker III operates commercial vehicles including
dump trucks and industrial hydro/vacuum trucks.
Maintenance Worker III is distinguished from a Maintenance Worker 11 by level of responsibility
and the complexity of duties assigned. Incumbents in this class perform the most complex and
responsible types of maintenance Worker duties including storm water system inspection,
construction maintenance and repair and are required to work independently exercising
judgment and initiative.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work that may
be performed. The omission of specific statements of duties does not exclude them from the
position if the work is similar, related or a logical assignment to this class.
I . Breaks and removes asphalt and concrete pavement/curbs; digs, shovel, hauls and
loads soils, sand and gravel, cement, asphalt mixes and other materials; patches
potholes; lays and rake, rolls and irons hot asphalt, installs shoulder barricades and
street guard rails.
2. Performs rough and finish concrete work; removes and hauls damaged concrete from
street curbs, sidewalks, gutters, stormdrains and catch basins; assists in fabricating,
utilizing and removing concrete forms; mixes, sets, trowels and finishes concrete and
cement.
3. Removes and/or paints over graffiti on private and public property; mixes paints;
prepares surfaces for painting; investigates and resolves citizen's complaints regarding
graffiti.
4. Identifies and removes debris, illegal dumping, trash, weeds and overgrown brush in City
streets and rights-of-way; sweeps and shovels debris and litter and loads trucks; cleans
storm drains and storm basins; stocks City parks with sand and bags in preparation for

flooding; assists tree crew with downed tree limbs during windstorms; empties loads alli
dump sites.
5. Operates heavy equipment such as industrial hydro/vacuum trucks, skip loader, backhoe
and heavy dump trucks, box pavers, rollers, patch trucks, boom trucks, compactors and
reclaimers; inspects vehicles and reports maintenance as required.
6. Operates rodding equipment, air compressors and pneumatic air tools, including
spaders, tampers, jackhammers, breaking guns, blowers and concrete saws; operates
hand and power tools and equipment for a variety of trades; maintains tools and
equipment in proper working order.
7. Assists in the operation of a video inspection camera unit to inventory the storm water
collection systems and to identify maintenancelrepair needs and problem conditions.
8. Performs regular storm water system inspection, maintenance and repair and responds
to emergency call -outs to clean-up and repair storm water conveyance systems.
55 - Proper procedures for identification, documentation and reporting of potentially
hazardous materials including the proper containment and disposal of all waste
materials removed from the stormwater conveyance system.
10. Drives vehicles to work sites and sets up and removes barricades and traffic control to
protect crews from street traffic.
11. Assists in installing traffic signs.
12. Cleans up work sites upon completion of job.
13. Performs routine services and repairs on equipment and vehicles.
14. Prepares and maintains a variety records and reports of work performed.
15. Performs special assignments as directed.
GENERAL QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
1. Methods, practices, techniques, tools and equipment used in the maintenance and
repair of streets, gutters, sidewalks, storm drains and related facilities.
2. Maintenance, adjustment and operation of complex light-, medium- and heavy-duty
construction, street and storm drain maintenance equipment.
3. Operation and maintenance of a wide variety of hand and power tools and equipment
common to the field.
4. Federal, State, and Local safe work practices and safety regulations and reporting
requirements applicable to assigned areas of maintenance responsibility, including
confined space entry and rescue retrieval techniques applicable to storm drain
inspection, maintenance, construction and repair.
5. Federal, state and local laws, regulations and industry standard practices applicable to
the assigned areas of responsibility.
6. Relevant traffic safety and traffic control regulations, codes, laws and guidelines. Proper
placement of cones, barricades and warning devices and directing traffic flow at job
sites.
Ability to:
1. Operate assigned equipment and vehicles safely and follow safe work practices and
procedures.
2. Follow safe work practices, procedures, and the application of safety regulations.

WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee
encounters while performing the essential functions of this class. Reasonable accommodations

The employee regularly works in outside Weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts and
in or near street traffic with significant exposure to unsafe or hazardous drivers. The employee

occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of
electrical shock. The noise level is frequently loud.
