V. Project Description /Need Statement
a
The Sesh Project is a program developed by San Bernardino Performing Artist Makeda Kumasi. The program teaches and
exposes youth and the community to tradition African and the Pan African arts of music, dance and storytelling. The project
includes several educational components: Summer Intensive, Bi- Weekly Drum and Dance Class, Writer's Workshop, and Stilt
Walking Classes. Moreover, the project provides exposer to professional Pan - African performance groups as well as
opportunities to see national touring companies and other youth performers of Pan African arts.
-The Summer Intensive is a week long day camp from 8am - 5pm at Anne Shirrells Park Community Center, that focuses on
various Pan African dance styles including Traditional West African, Jazz, Caribbean, and Hip Hop. The curriculum also
includes classes in improvisation, choreography, journaling through self reflection, as well as music appreciation for each dance
genre. The six day program will culminate in a final performance at the community center where the participants will showcase
what they learned to the community.
-The Drum and Dance Class at Anne Shirrells Park Community Center meets twice a week and continues throughout the
traditional school year. These classes focus on traditional West African rhythms and movement. Each week builds on skills for
practice and performance of this traditional art form. Along with learning music and the correlating dance, participants will also
gain comprehensive knowledge regarding the original social context of each selection, as well as the heritage and cultural
significances that is valuable to the lives of our community. Participants will showcase what they learned in The Sesh Project
winter production at the Sturges Theater and other local opportunities like the Inland Kwanzaa Group Annual Kwanzaa Festival,
the San Bernardino Black History Month Black Business Exposition, The Ultimate Doundounba Competition San Bernardino,
Juneteenth Festival, as well as the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade and the LuLu Washington Performance Stage during
the Taste of Soul Festival in Los Angeles.
-The Writers' Workshop is a 4 month series meeting every second and fourth Sunday, July through December, then again
March through June, at World Seafood Restaurant, 1588 W. Highland Ave. in San Bernardino. This workshop will guide new,
novice, and veteran writers through the writing process including story arc, character development, pros and poetry techniques,
and oratorical delivery. Participants are encouraged to utilize content from their personal experience, emphasizing the notion
that we are the historians of our community. The series will culminate with a stage performance of the participants original
works during The Sesh Project winter production at the Sturges Theater and the San Bernardino Juneteenth event.
To expose our participants to professional Pan African performances, professional ensembles will be invited to perform at The
Sesh Project winter production which will be a grand celebration of African American culture and heritage. Furthermore, we will
have two field trips to Los Angeles. In October, we will participate in the Taste of Soul Festival where participants will perform on
the Lulu Washington Dance Studio Performance Stage, also getting a chance to experience performances of professional and
youth groups of varied genres. Additionally, in March, fifteen dedicated participants and five chaperones will see a production of
the touring Alvin Alley Dance Company.
There is a void of African arts in the San Bernardino area. This program will help fill the void of activities that target African
American families and other San Bernardino residents that have an interest in traditional and contemporary African arts.
Specifically, the target population includes underserved and low income African and African American families of San
Bernardino County. This is a population of whom 1/3 have weight related health risks and inclining cases of mental health
disorders, as well as representing over 35% of the people living on or below poverty income (San Bernardino County 2014
Community Indicator Report). Furthermore the program aims to serve as a conduit for the transmission of the positive mental
and physical health values, norms and practices that are based in African heritage and culture. Moreover, it adds to the multi-
cultural activities available to the community at large.
Makeda (Clydean Parker) Kumasi, through the Umoja Ensemble of the Inland Empire (UEIE), WE 3 PRODUCTIONS (WE 3)
and other collaborative projects, has been providing arts education and entertainment in the Inland Empire for almost a decade.
She is a lecturer in the Department of Dance at the University of Riverside and a small business owner in San Bernardino with
WE 3 PRODUCTIONS. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Theater from the University of Southern California and a Master in
Education from the University of Phoenix. She has been an advocate for pan African Arts Education teaching Fine Arts at
charter schools, summer programs and community classes in San Bernardino. As Director of The Sesh Project programs, Ms.
Kumasi (Professor Parker) will facilitate most of the classes as well as enlist qualified artist to teach their specific genre.
The local business partnership with World Seafood includes facility use for the Writers' Workshop, as well as providing a %10
discount advertisement in all production programs. Furthermore, World Seafood Restaurant will post flyers and advertisement
for The Sesh Project's classes and performances.
A grant from the San Bernardino Fine Arts Commission will help fund marketing and printing expenses, teacher and artists's
compositions, field trip costs, facility rental, performance costumes and class supplies.

Our flag ship summer program and winter program, Urban Griot, in collaboration with the United Nations of
Consciousness, engaged over 450 San Bernardino residents in the Pan African Art of Song, Music, Dance, and
Story Telling. In 2015 we collaborated with We The People Cultural Dance Center in Riverside, receiving a grant
from The Community Foundation to produce a two night running, multi -media production that featured
professional, semi - professional, and student performers. The production was a culmination of community drum
and dance classes, as well as a writer's workshop that encouraged the development of personal experience
scripts of Inland Empire residents. This program engaged approximately 425 Inland Empire Residents in Pan
African and Multi Media Art. Both performances had standing room only audiences at the University of
California, Riverside's Barbara and Culver Center for the Arts.
