Project Description/ Need Statement Women Leading The Way - A Salute to Women in S.T.E.M. is an eight week multidisciplinary program designed to inspire curiosity about trailblazing women through the enjoyment of literary arts and visual arts for 5th and 6th grade girls that culminates with a IiveWomen's History Month performance of their work. Advances by women in S.T.E.M. (science, technology, engineering, math) date back to the 18th Century. Unfortunately, most of these accomplishments are not widely known or publicized. The museum will change that for the students, their families, their school, the Fine Arts Commission, and the community at large. Students in this program will begin by researching a little known woman in S.T.E.M. Guest instructors will teach students performance techniques, poetic form and structure, speaking presence, audience connection, and memorization techniques. Based on their research and training, students will develop a re- enactment of the historical woman that reflects her accomplishments. They will design some form of dress and artistic backdrop. Students will also create an engaging three to five minute oral presentation that will be shared with visitors on the day of the exhibition. Student work will remain on display until the end of the school year. Artists tell stories. What better way to engage students in a subject they say they least enjoy- history? It is a complex world, and students who successfully complete this program will walk away with a valuable and much needed understanding of the interconnections between the arts, humanities, and academics. NeedForProgram Woodward Leadership Academy is a Transitional Kindergarten through Sixth grade elementary charter school in the city of San Bernardino. The school is authorized to operate as a public school by the San Bernardino City Unified School District. Our student body is approximately 44% percent female with 97% of our students qualifying for free or reduced lunch due to coming from low income households. Our school population is 77% African American and 19% Latino. Many of our students come to us in need of ways to express themselves due to being exposed to traumas and the hardships of life. At the same time, our parents rely on us, the school, to fully educate their children and prepare them for the future. With the arts being squeezed out of school, so goes Art Teachers who are dedicated to motivating students to appreciate the arts and to take an active role in being creatives. This has a disparaging impact on students in low income communities like ours because parents don't always have the disposable income to expose their childrento out of school activities. 2 Unfortunately, without a program such as this, the school has a greater challenge in engaging students to literary, visual and performing arts due to the budget constraints that most schools face when attempting to add arts programs. And, without this program, there will be one less opportuntiy to work with community based partners and art experts who have a passion for sharing the joys of the arts and the beauty of creating art. Intended Results Literary, visual and performing arts provides a therapeutic value that cannot be underestimated. We expect that when students are engaged in this program, we will 3 see a reduction in bullying and other behavior problems that surface when students are bored with the lesson or in need of a creative outlet. By teaming with the community on this program, we are able to bring the arts alive right in the classroom for our students. Tapping into their imagination and creative side will provide for them an opportunvty to come from behind their desks and outside their day to day work to create a connection to school and the arts they otherwise may not receive. Students will have an active voice in their own learning as they are the creators of the work. In addition, integrating a literary, visual and performing arts program provides the opportunity for students who are visual and kinesthetic learners along with those who possess an affinity for the arts, to express themselves in creative ways that core subject matter such as mathematics and other basic skills taught at the elementary level do not always allow. This ensures that Woodward Leadership Academy students receive a broad and balanced curriculum. As our school prepares to begin its S.T.E.A.M. (science, technology, engineering, arts, math) curriculum for the 2017 -2018 school year, including a program to expose our female students to opportunities available in S.T.E.M. careers through visual and performing arts further solidifies the foundation of Woodward's academic offering. This program will expose our students to career fields in which they may not otherwise learn about. It will build their self- esteem in the area of comprehending S.T.E.M. subject matter content, thus increasing overall academic achievement. As an added bonus, by bringing this program to Woodward Leadership Academy, not only will our student body benefit, our teachers will receive valuable staff development training which will result in additional lessons and projects they can addto their S.T.E.A.M. lesson toolkits. Thus, the knowledge gained through staff development will have a lasting impact for students who experience the program, as well as for students going forward. Finally, this program will serve as an additional method of the thematic learning our school's S.T.E.A.M. program will be utilizing, therefore, it is in alignment with the focus and vision of the Woodward Leadership Academy, Board, Administration, and teaching team. By partnering with local community members for this project, Woodward Leadership Academy will continue to fulfill the vision of its founders in becoming a school that embraces thecommunity. Vlll. Brief History of Project/ Background of Project Collaborators 5 Women Leading The Way -A Salute to Women In S.T.E.M.. began in February 2014 as a segment in the Blacks in High Tech Performance at the Steelworkers Hall in Fontana celebrating Black History. Using Skype, Patricia Bath came to life for the audience through the interpretation of a local artist, with Cynthia Frazier as the interviewer. In 2015, the 1st Annual Women Leading The Way Live Museum was held at the Rec Center in Grand Terrace. Girls from San Bernardino, Redlands, Fontana, and Grand Terrace came together to showcase the accomplishments of Patricia Bath, Lena Walker, Gabby Douglas, and others. Local Engineer Regina Talamantez, Principal at RT Engineering, spoke to the attendees about her life as a woman in a male dominated industry and how parents can support their children's growth and development leading to big accomplishments no matter where they come from. The 2nd Annual event will take place in San Bernardino on April 30, 2017.
