V. Project Description /Need Statement
Arts Connection will collaborate with Fallen Fruit to create a living artwork installation at The Garcia Center for
the Arts in the City of San Bernardino, with satellite locations in the surrounding neighborhood. The installations
will include a variety of citrus trees, hand - crafted wooden picnic tables etched with community quotes, and be
accompanied by a suite of public participatory projects. The activities are designed to foster a sense of
belonging, sharing, togetherness and pride -- strengthening the community by making fresh fruit freely available.
Community members are engaged in planting, tending and harvesting the fruit trees which beautify the
neighborhood; show that it is care for and about; inspire dialogue; help neigr hors to meet and spend time
together; and encourage youth to give back to their city and community. The project also promotes health,
supports food security and works to combat high rates of nutrition - related disease in our community, by creating
a fun, beautiful way for community members to
partake in nutritious, fresh fruit.
The projects will include an event called "Lemonade Stand," where participants receive a fresh glass of organic
lemonade in exchange for drawing a self - portrait onto a lemon. Collectively the lemon self - portraits create a
communal group portrait. The hand -drawn expressions illustrate joy and innocence, as well as wisdom and age.
Documentation, including photographic portraits of participants alongside their lemon self - portraits, and stories
collected about the neighborhood, will become the basis for an exhibition proposed to take place at the San
Bernardino Public Library. We will be presenting to the Library Board on February 23rd and have been working
with Linda Adams Yeh and Ed Erjavek. A zine will also be produced in partrership with Inlandia's Poet Laureate,
Nikia Chaney, and print maker Bob Hurton, artist in residence at the Garcia Center for the Arts. Ms. Chaney will
lead a poetry and writing workshop, and Mr. Hurton will lead printmaking and production of the zine. This is a
multi - faceted, public art initiative that will include classes, workshops, talks, and installations.
Leading up to the public projects, the internal team (Fallen Fruit lead artists David Burns and Austin Young, Arts
Connection's Executive Director, Danielle Wallis, and Dr. Ernest Garcia, Director of the Garcia Center for the
Arts) will work together with community partners to develop programming and calendaring through site visits,
researching any infrastructure needs, and addressing the details that will ensure our collective and holistic
success for this work. Other partners who have committed their support at this time are Inlandia Institute to lead
the poetry and writing workshop, The San Bernardino Valley Municipal Water District for potential tree planting
sites, The San Bernardino Public Library for hosting 2 public participatory events and an exhibition, and the San
Bernardino County Museum, which will host a public lecture. We are also in discussions with Omnitrans, but their
participation is unconfirmed at this time.

IX. Future Objectives
If awarded, this grant would serve as matching funds to the California Arts Council's Artist Activating
Communities Grant (notification by the end of May, 2017). We are also working to secure both
in -kind donations and funds from other organizations. We have already approached Omnitrans as a
possible site, Hope for Housing for further funding, and will be approaching the Incredible Edible
Community Garden for in -kind assistance. We will continue to build partnerships with the aim of
ensuring the collective and holistic success for all involved- -the participants, partners and community.

X. Provide a brief history /background of your organization /school project (s). (What you have
done before in this category of the arts.
Arts Connection, the Arts Council of San Bernardino County, is dedicated to stimulating
creative and economic vitality and enriching lives throughout thE! communities we serve by
providing support, promotion, education, and advocacy for the arts. In 2010, The Community
Foundation of Riverside and San Bernardino Counties (TCF) spearheaded the effort to create
Arts Connection. TCF, together with support from the San Bernardino County Board of
Supervisors and a task force of over 70 cultural and civic leaders, developed and
implemented a plan for a new, non - profit arts council. Arts Connection was created to act as
an umbrella organization, sharing knowledge and resources, supporting initiatives that
engage, encourage and advocate for community building through the arts, and offering
funding solutions for projects, art organizations and artists.
As an umbrella organization we facilitate the exchange of arts information through our e-
newsletter, social media, and website. We also actively cultivate relationships with local news
media to encourage and increase arts coverage. Our website offers news and events pages,
an opportunities page, and a directory where members can link their websites. The latest
addition to our site is a cultural asset map, which serves to collect and share information with
the goal of increasing visibility and facilitating communication between the arts and other
sectors. Programming this past year also included a Veterans Initiative in the Arts (VIA) Grant,
For which we facilitated a multi - faceted environmental arts project in the High Desert, and
collaborated with Mil -Tree, 29 Palms Art Gallery, the environmental community, Copper
Mountain Community College, artists, veterans, active duty and the larger community. We
taught papermaking, mold making /casting, and silk- screening in a 3 month long project that
culminated in an exhibition at 29 Palms Art Gallery. We also hosted a series of political
cartooning classes in the City of San Bernardino, funded by a previous San Bernardino City
Fine Arts Commission grant and a California Arts Council Artists Activating Communities
grant. The classes were led by local artists Phil Yeh and Michael Segura who also brought in
professional guest artists /cartoonists from San Diego, Los Angeles and the region. Work was
published in a special election issue of Uncle Jam magazine, in the Inland Empire Community
Newspapers and on their website. We continue to host an annual conference, events,
professional development and networking opportunities.
XI. Attach a copy of your last fiscal year financial report, audited or unaudited. This does not
