V. Project Description /Need Statement
Doundounba is a traditional west african rhythm and dance known as the dance of the strong man. It is a dance that showcase
the heritage and culture of Africans and African Americans, and the values of strength, agility, vitality, community,
communication, creativity, and wholistic health. This dance was known to be used as a way to resolve conflict and
disagreements in the village or with neighboring tribes in the Great Mali Empire of West Africa.
The 1 st Annual Ultimate Doundounba Experience San Bernardino is an invitational competition hosted by San Bernardino
performing arts group Umoja Ensemble of the Inland Empire (UEIE) and FLO Motion of Riverside. Dance companies from
across the state will be invited to San Bernardino Valley College's Auditorium where they will showcase their Doundounba to
guest judges who will calculate a set of standards to determine the best performance. The top performing group will be awarded
the grand prize as well as the title San Bernardino Ultimate Doundounba. There will be a $10 ticket charge for adults. Children
eighteen and under will be admitted free of charge.
The program will also feature guest performances from the Umoja Ensemble of the Inland Empire (UEIE), FLO Motion, and the
youth group from The Sesh Project at Anne Shirrells Park Community Center. Moreover, the project provides San Bernardino
residence access to this traditional art form, as well as establishes an annual event that brings these artists to San Bernardino,
specifically Valley College.
The educational component is built into the program. The feature performance will also include a lecture demonstration with
audience participation, educating the audience about the cultural context of Doundounba, the various West African percussion
instruments used, and dance movements associated with the rhythm. Several audience members will be brought on stage to
demonstrate playing the instruments, as well as dance. The remaining audience members will participate in the lecture
demonstration by clapping drum rhythms and doing dance moves while standing in front of their chairs.
The local business partnership will be with World Seafood Restaurant on Highland and Medical Center Dr. They will provide a
%10 discount advertisement in the production program as well as display promotional flyers.
Makeda (Clydean Parker) Kumasi has been providing arts education and entertainment in the Inland Empire for over a decade.
Currently, she is a lecturer in the Department of Dance at the University of California, Riverside and a small business owner in
San Bernardino with WE 3 PRODUCTIONS. She holds a Master of Fine Arts in Theater from the University of Southern
California and a Master in Education from the University of Phoenix. Ms. Kumasi has over 20 years experience performing with
Southern California African Dance ensembles that have toured nationally and internationally, and is the founder and artistic
director of the Umoja Ensemble of the Inland Empire an arts group with a mission to help restore, repair, and regenerate the
physical, psychological and spiritual health of the populations we serve, through the preservation, practice, and presentation of
African Arts. She has been an advocate for Pan African Arts Education teaching Fine Arts at charter schools, summer programs
and community classes and organizing stage productions in San Bernardino and the Inland Empire in general. As director, she
will coordinate invitations to various African Dance companies and guest judges in December 2017, set the standard judging
criteria, as well as organize the February 2018 production program.
We The People Cultural Dance Center (WTPCDC) will be the fiscal sponsor of the project. Founder and Artistic Director, Lori
Heyes is a lecturer at Moreno Valley and San Bernardino Valley Colleges, and is Director of the Dance Department for Inland
Conservatory for the Performing Arts in Ontario, as well as founder and Artistic Director of FLO Motion. She holds an Master of
Fine Arts in Dance from the University of California, Riverside. WTPCDC's goal is to make fine arts accessible to families with
school age children. Their mission is to increase community awareness, appreciation and respect for cultural commonalities of
world artistic expressions displayed through dance and music. WTPCDC's greatest community impact has been through an 8
year running Annual Drum, Mask & Dance Festival. For more than 14 years we have been providing cultural fine arts education
and engaging over 100,000 people throughout Riverside and San Bernardino counties in classes, workshops, performances,
lecture demonstrations and community festivals.
There is a void of African arts in the San Bernardino area. This program will help fill the void of activities that target African
American families and other San Bernardino residents that have an interest in traditional and contemporary African arts.
Specifically, the target population includes underserved and low income African and African American families of San
Bernardino County. This is a population of whom 1/3 have weight related health risks and inclining cases of mental health
disorders, as well as representing over 35% of the people living on or below poverty income (San Bernardino County 2014
Community Indicator Report). Furthermore the program aims to serve as a conduit for the transmission of the positive mental
and physical health values, norms and practices that are based in African heritage and culture. Moreover, it adds to the multi-
cultural activities available to the community at large.
A grant from the San Bernardino Fine Arts Commission will help fund marketing and printing expenses, guest judge
honorariums, facility rental, Technical staff fees, performer compensation, as well as production catering and other
miscellaneous expenses.

ix. Future Objectives
The Ultimate Doundounba will be an annual invitation competition. The anticipation is that the popularity
of the production will grow creating an interest for continued participation by perfromance ensembles
and San Bernadino residence as audience members. It will also foster creativity within the genre as well
as provide a performance venue for students of The Sesh Project at Anne Shirelles Park.

X. Provide a brief history /background of your organization /school project (s). (What you have
done before in this category of the arts.
For almost two decades WE 3 PRODUCTIONS (WE 3) has offered a variety of workshops, performances and
productions of West African Dance and various Pan African Arts. Our productions have been sought out by
public and private institutions including the San Bernardino Public Library, Mt. San Antonio College, Mt. San
Jacinto College, University of California Channel Island, Loma Linda African Network, The African Fire Fighters
in Benevolent Association of Los Angeles, Rivers Run Deep Institute, We the People Cultural Dance Center of
Riverside, Girl Scouts of America, San Bernardino Black Chamber of Commerce, and United Nations of
Consciousness at Anne Sherilles Park in San Bernardino.
We The People Cultural Dance Center ( WTPCDC) has reached more than 100,000 people within the last ten
years through its community based activities including classes, workshops, performances, lecture
demonstrations and an eight year running Annual Drum, Mask & Dance Festival in Riverside County. In 2014
WTPCDC collaborated with WE 3 on "Exploring African Expressions; A Dance and Drum Project ", summer
classes held in San Bernardino. Winter of 2015 the artistic collaboration continued as they produced "I Know
Women; Soliloquies of Feminine Comprehensions ", a multi media production funded by a grant from The
Community Foundation of Riverside.
The production collaboration "I Know Women..." featured professional, semi - professional, and student
performers. The production was a culmination of community drum and dance classes, as well as a writer's
workshop that encouraged the development of personal experience scripts of Inland Empire residents. This
program engaged approximately 425 Inland Empire Residents in Pan African and Multi Media Art. Both
performances had standing room only audiences at the University of California, Riverside's Barbara and Culver
Center for the Arts.
