V. Project Description /Need Statement
After nine years of highly successful opera productions by the CSUSB Opera Theatre including the most recent
presentation of Chinary Ung's Still Life After Death, Opera Director Dr. Stacey Fraser is making application for funding
through the Fine Arts Commission Grant, City of San Bernardino to develop and maintain the current Opera Theatre
program to comprise a full season of opera that will include an opera scenes concert for the fall of 2017, a winter 2018
presentation of short one act operas and a full main stage 2018 spring production of El Goto del botos by Spanish
composer Xavier Montsalvatge.
The funding from the Fine Arts Commission of the City of San Bernardino is indeed something from which our opera
program and our 2017 -2018 season would greatly benefit. Opera is an expensive venture and to be done correctly and
in the traditional manner requires an orchestra, sets, costumes, lighting, reheasal pianist, publicity as well as specific
personnel costs. The target audience will include the campus community of the Main CSUSB campus in San Bernardino
as well as the satellite campus in Palm Desert, and the community at large in the city of San Bernardino. In addition to
the fully staged performances with orchestra, the CSUSB Opera Theatre students will also do community outreach
concerts within the San Bernardino City Unified School District in an effort to bring both opera education and opera
performance to our San Bernardino youth. These outreach performances will use piano accompaniment and the
repertoire will consist of excerpts from our main stage production. The fall Opera Scenes performance is scheduled for
November 2017, the presentation of one act operas is scheduled for February 2018 and the main stage performances
of the spring production are scheduled for May 2018 in the Recital Hall in the Department of Music, CSUSB.
The productions will be directed by Dr. Stacey Fraser and performances will be conducted by Maestro John Mario,
acclaimed opera conductor and current music director of the Temecula Valley Symphony and Coachella Valley
Symphony. Garry Fish will be the Technical Director for the entire CSUSB Opera Theatre 2017 -2018 season and
Costume Design will be created by Emmy winning Jacqueline Saint -Anne, a collaborator of the CSUSB Opera Theatre for
the past five years. Publicity will be done by the Department of Music publicist in conjuction with the Opera Director,
Stacey Fraser. The Development Office in the College of Arts and Letters will help to promote the full opera season at
CSUSB. Ms. Julie Nichols, Director of the Office of Development, will be a key person in the promotion and continued
expansion of the CSUSB Opera Theatre Program. The outreach events at participating K -12 after school programs will
be scheduled throughout the 2017 -2018 academic year.
Although the City of San Bernardino is only 60 miles east of Los Angeles and the Los Angeles Opera, it is only the
privileged few members of the San Bernardino community that have had the opportunity to attend a live operatic
performance. It is the mission of the Opera Theatre program at CSUSB to not only prepare our students for a career in
operatic performance but also to bring modern and innovative adaptations of traditional opera to the underserved city
of San Bernardino and its surrounding areas. Funding from the Fine Arts Commission will allow the CSUSB Opera
Theatre to continue to present a full season of performances, one in fall, one in winter and the main -stage production
in spring. Due to the increased popularity of the opera program, both the students and our audience greatly benefit
from a longer season.
The fall performance will feature excerpts from Menotti's Amohl and the Night Visitors, Irving Berlin's White Christmas
and Meet me in Saint Louis by Roger Edens and Conrad Salinger. The excerpts from these works will be presented in a
semi - staged fashion with reduced orchestration and feature the students of the CSUSB Opera Theatre. The winter
performance will be a presentation of one- act operas that will feature music faculty, students and guest artists.
If successful in securing funding from the Fine Arts Commission, the Spring 2018 main stage production will be El gato
del botas, by Xavier Montsalvatge. It will be presented in full costume with sets, digital projection, chamber orchestra
as well as the integration of puppets.
El goto del botas (Puss in Boots) is the story of an extraordinary cat that decides to change the fortune of his
poor master armed with just a bag and a new pair of boots. From chasing rabbits to challenging a powerful ogre, this
cat's crafty ways soon earn his master the celebrated title of Marquis of Carabas, the admiration of the King and the
attentions of the beautiful Princess. Puss in Boots (El gato con botas), an opera for children, was written by Catalan
composer Xavier Montsalvatge and based on Charles Perrault's much loved fairytale.

The CSUSB Opera Theatre is currently in collaboration and partnership with the San Bernardino business, Bertrand's
Music Store. This partnership includes the following:
1) CSUSB Opera Theatre posters promoting productions are displayed in Bertrand's music store.
2) CSUSB Opera Theatre will include an advertisement for Bertrand's in their playbills.
3) CSUSB Opera Theatre will make score purchases through Bertrand's music store.
A letter from Shawn Roah, General Manager of Bertrand's Music Store documenting this partnership is included in this
grant application.

IX. Future Objectives
Plans for supplemental funding include additional grant writing both internally at Cal State San Bernardino as well as
externally through organizations such as the National Endowment for the Arts. In addition to the free outreach events
for K -12 schools, it is the intent of the Opera Theatre program at California State University San Bernardino to do small
concerts in private homes as a method of creating donations from members of the local community.
There are additional plans to sell advertisement space in our opera programs. We began this method of fundraising in
2009 and did indeed have success with regard to selling ad space to local businesses and other arts organizations such as
the San Bernardino Symphony. We do plan to approach some of the corporate businesses that may have more funds to
purchase more detailed and bigger ads in our programs. The development office in the College of Arts and Letters is
working with Dr. Stacey Fraser to reach out to these businesses and prospective donors.
If we are unable to raise enough funds to present this project in the way that has been described in this proposal, we will
simply need to cut back on our expenses, perhaps by reducing the salary /wages of the orchestra, conductor, rehearsal
pianist and guest artists. The worst -case scenario would be to present the all three productions in concert style without
sets and costumes and perhaps only with piano accompaniment.
X. Provide a brief history /background of your organization /school project (s). (What you have
done before in this category of the arts).
The Opera Theatre program in the Department of Music at California State University, San Bernardino has been
producing fully staged operatic productions and outreach activities for the past nine years. Dr. Stacey Fraser, Professor
and Opera Director has worked diligently to develop an opera program that showcases the great talent and operatic
voices that are currently enrolled in the Music Major, Bachelor of Arts degree program at Cal State San Bernardino. Four
members of the full time music faculty are relatively new hires and have made aggressive efforts in the recruiting and
retention of high quality music majors. This has led to a strong vocal program, one in which our voice majors have been
featured in various venues including performances throughout the State as well as in Italy and Spain. Past opera
productions at CSUSB include Bernstein's Trouble in Tahiti, done in a Mad Men inspired style, Humperdinck's Hdnsel and
Gretel set in modern day Los Angeles with a gothic and fantastical twist, Mozart's Impresario set in the Wild West, San
Bernardino, 1882, Mozart's Cosi fan tutte, set in the beloved City of San Bernardino Harris Company Department Store,
circa 1964 and Offenbach's RSVP: or a Musicale at Mr. Cauliflower's set in the Roaring 20's New York City, circa 1928.
Dr. Fraser produced two Latin- American pieces for the first time in Spring of 2014: Maria de Buenos Aires by Astor
Piazzolla with libretto by Horacio Ferrer and the premiere of Concert Suite from Frida by Robert Xavier Rodriquez. Due to
the overwhelming appreciation that was shown by the San Bernardino and CSUSB audiences for presenting operas that
incorporate music and culture of a Latin American and /or Hispanic demographic, Dr. Fraser presented another work by
the critically acclaimed composer, Robert Xavier Rodriguez, La Curandero in of May 2015.
During the season of 2015 -2016 the CSUSB Opera Theatre presented scenes from Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods
and Gaetano Donizetti's Don Pasquale as well as the West Coast premiere of the two piano and percussion version of
Kurt Weill and Bertolt Brecht's The Seven Deadly Sins. The May 2016 main stage production of Don Pasquale was an
innovative adaptation of the piece inspired by the films of Hollywood director Quentin Tarantino. In addition, the CSUSB
Opera Theatre performed for six schools in the San Bernardino City Unified School District.
13
During this present season, we have already had two on campus performances and two performances for the SBCUSD.
The fall scenes program entitled Opera Unchained featured works by Handel, Gluck, Mozart, Corigliano and Sondheim.
The scenes were fully costumed by Emmy winning designer Jacqueline Saint -Anne with lighting design by CSUSB Theatre
student, Raymond Jones.
Our 2017 - faculty /student /guest artist production entitled Still Life After Death featured works of some of the leading
contemporary music composers of the country. Guest artists including Grammy winning percussionist Nick Terry and
Grammy nominated percussionist Justin DeHart performed alongside the CSUSB faculty. The CSUSB Opera Theatre
students were integral in their contribution to lighting, sound, running crew and poster design. Our upcoming
performances include a concert version of Monkey See Monkey Do and Tango by Robert Xavier Rodriguez. This concert
will first be presented in oratorio style on March 17th, 2017. Our spring production will be an innovative staging of
Monkey See Monkey Do and Tango, two works that integrate both the standard operatic traditions as well as the
aesthetics of Latin- American music. The production will include a sets, lighting, costume and projection. Performance
dates are May 12th and 13th, 2017.
Our opera students have gone on to pursue Master degree programs in nationally renowned conservatories such as the
Manhattan School of Music, University of Kansas and the University of Redlands and have sung with major companies
including the Los Angeles Opera and San Diego Opera companies. They have won voice competitions at the regional and
state levels and have been chosen to participate in various summer opera programs across the country and abroad. A
recent graduate completed the international tour of Bernstein's West Side Story in the principal role of Maria.
The CSUSB Opera Theatre has been partnering with Bertrand's Music Store for the present 2016 -2017 season on various
promotions. This partnership will continue through 2017 -2018.

5. How much was your grant? 11,132.35
6. How much of your project was funded from other sources (including ticket sales)? 13, 939.00
7. How important was the grant from SB Fine Arts Commission to the success of your project:
The grant from the SB Fine Arts Commission has helped to fund significant operatic
presentations on the CSUSB campus and to bring opera to the students of the City of San
Bernardino Unified School District. Due to this funding, the Opera Theatre has been able to
costume our shows, build appropriate sets, have first class lighting and an actual opera Maestro
(John Mario) conduct our students. In addition, we have been able to bring in Grammy winning
artists to perform with us on our CSUSB recital hall stage.
One of the greatest rewards of the grant is the fact that we are able to bring opera into the
schools of the SBUSD. The students that we have reached in our outreach performances are
completely spellbound when they watch our CSUSB students perform, they are inquisitive and
engaged and we feel that we are spreading our love of opera and music to many of those who
have had little to no exposure to the arts.
8. What impact (if any) has your project had locally?
The teachers and principals of the SBUSD that have had us perform at their respective schools
are supportive and generally delighted when the CSUSB Opera Theatre visits their campuses.
We really enjoy performing and teaching about opera to these young students. They are
respectful and engaged as we perform; it is our hope that our performances will inspire these
young students to have a love for the arts, either as future audience members or as artists
themselves.
Please fill in the amount granted and the expenditure figures for your project.

9. Were the aims of your project achieved? What aspects went particularly well, or not so well?
All aims of the project thus far have been met — We presented a full evening of opera scenes in
fall that was costumed with lighting design by CSUSB student Raymond Jones. We have already
done two outreach performances in the SBUSD and performed to approximately 600 middle
school students. There are plans to take the spring production into five additional schools in the
spring.
Our winter faculty /student /guest production was a big success and featured some of the top
musicians and artists in Southern California. We received a great deal of press through the
Office of Strategic Communications; they have played a vital role in publicizing the events for
our CSUSB Opera Theatre events.
There have been some challenges — we are going through a new hiring process for a new box
office /publicity person, thus the design work and publicizing of events has had to fall on faculty
and student assistants. I have however had great success working directly with the campus
Office of Strategic Communications to publicize our Opera Theatre events; they have been
supportive and have done a great job featuring us in both significant press releases as well as on
our homepage website.
It continues to be a challenge in coordinating our Outreach visits to the schools, simply due to
their busy schedules and our availability. We have however remained true to our promise to
bring opera to as many students of the SBUSD as possible. We have already completed two of
the visits and are in the process of coordinating the additional visits for spring.
If possible, please send a photograph, a program or copies of press articles relating to your project.
Please see attached.

This is terrific news! I am so happy the students can attend! We should be done at 9pm at the latest. My
husband Albie Hewlett will also be attending - he is an 8th Grade teacher at Curtis Middle School. He will
be happy to help chaperone.
The posters /flyers have not been printed yet but I will send these to you as soon as they have been
created.
Thanks so much and I am so glad it will work out for everyone!
Best!

Perhaps because this version of Gaetano Donizetti's

Tarantino's style. And, more importantly, the producers
have a direct line to the man who put the pulp in "Pulp

The play revolves around Don Pasquale, a wealthy man in later years who is dismayed
that his nephew and heir, Ernesto, will not marry the woman the don has chosen for
him. Don Pasquale decides to teach the younger man a lesson by vowing to take a
bride and father an heir himself, while at the same time throwing Ernesto out of his
house.
Don Pasquale's confidant, Dr. Malatesta, convinces the old man to marry a woman he
has passed off as his sister, Sofronia. Malatesta has no sister. In truth, Sofronia is
^!crina, the woman Ernesto is in love with. Farce ensues.
Director Stacey Fraser said the idea forthis particular twist on "Don Pasquale" came
to her a couple of years ago.

Norina marries Don Pasquale, feigning love, but immediately turning into a powerful
adversary once the knot is tied. In the end, once Don Pasquale discovers she loves
Ernesto, he is only too happy to give his blessing to their marriage, which was the
scheme all along.
Students in the production not only had to learn some martial arts moves, dance
choreography and spoken lines. They also had to learn their singing parts in Italian, a
language none of them knows.
"That was a challenge," said Olivia Clark, 22, a fourth -year music major, "learning the
-luslc ana havine to tell a story that's not in your language."
Clark, who plays a Beatrix Kiddo -style Norina, said it was also a challenge getting into
character. Norina, wearing black platform shoes, ribbed sheer stockings and a
kimono, wields her sword in her first scene, threatening Malatesta before she
completely understands the plan he has cooked up.
"She's really fierce," Clark said, "I'm not. Trying to channel Uma Thurman's qualities is
very difficult."

But nobody dies."
Tarantino might have a hard time with that.
And Fraser said if she had more funding, that might change. She did get an $11,000
grant from San Bernardino's Fine Arts Council. It allowed her to stage the opera, but
the money goes fast, she said.
The main point of bringing a Tarantino feel to the production is not to spill blood on
stage but to get people to come and see opera," she said.
"if that means putting someone on stage in a yellow suit with a sword and having
some fight choreography, then I'm going to do it. I find it very exciting."

Transportation for a journey of spiritual transcendence will be provided by pieces from some of America's most influential
contemporary composers during "Still Life After Death," which comes to Cal State San Bernardino Friday, Jan. 27.
The 7:30 p.m. performance, which will be held in the CSUSB Performing Arts Building Rectal Hall, features Stacey Fraser,
soprano and CSUSB music professor.
Taking inspiration from the Dec. 2, 2015, terror attack in San Bernardino, the show is an evening of dramatic chamber works
that will offer listeners "a kind of self- awareness and healing," says Fraser, who also is coordinator for the university's Opera
Theatre Program.
