Project Description /Need Statement The San Bernardino Garcia Center for the Arts was dedicated on November 14th, 2015 by the San Bernardino Valley Concert Assn., an organization which has been active in the cultural life of San Bernardino since 1933. In the organization's present form, it seeks to sponsor, promote and sustain the arts in our community through the programs listed in this application. The arts can play a critical role in the resurgence of San Bernardino. • WiFi expansion is necessary for full use of the facilities with internet and television. • Children's movies and art experiences for parents and children will help in developing critical community development. • Puppet-making, set construction, script writing and performance will all contribute to great experiences for youngsters between 8 -12 years of age. • Dia de los Muertos will be a program distinct from activities of other organizations. We will concentrate on art work, poetry, music and historical /cultural presentations. The public will be encouraged to share remembrances "te acuerdas" (do you recall) about the "muertos." • The ninth day of "Las Posadas" (Joseph and Mary looking for lodging) will culminate at the Garcia Center where the "peregrines (pilgrims) will be welcomed. • Five cultural sessions throughout the year will feature families from five ethnic groups sharing history, art, music, dance and literature. • Four theatrical events will be produced during the grant year. Regarding business partnerships, we have a partnership with Pete's Finishland, in which we purchase used furniture (tables) at a discount. They allow us to use their large trash bins weekly for large discards. Our arrangement with Rickard's Art Supplies is that our resident artist will submit his list of necessary supplies, and Mr. Rickard will sell to us at a discount price which is close to that of the commercial art supplier that has been used. In response, the Garcia Arts Center will acknowledge Rickard's Art Supplies in some of our program publicity. VI. Provide a brief history/background of your organization /school project (s). (What you have done before in this category of the arts. The San Bernardino Valley Concert Association was formed in 1933, incorporated in 1966 in the State of California and as a 501 -c -3 non - profit in 1966. For its first 66 years, it provided performances in music and dance in a number of venues with artists from national and international sources. In 2010, for a number of reasons, the emphasis shifted to sponsoring /promoting/ and sustaining non - profit and school arts groups, with all expenses paid by SBVCA and all proceeds going to the groups. In 2015, we acquired a long -term lease for 536 West 111h Street with the intent of creating an Art Center. The building, which had been heavily vandalized, has been renovated to serve as a site for a variety of arts events and activities. Since the building was dedicated in the fall of 2015, we have hosted many arts activities for all ages, including art classes, a folk singing group, 2 plays, poetry readings, memoir writing class, art exhibits, a dance day, and several community groups. XI. Attach a copy of your last fiscal year financial report, audited or unaudited. This does not apply to schools or parks.
