N/A W. Proiect Description /Need Statement Bing Wong Elementary serves 800 students ranging from Preschool to 6th grade. 98% of our students are on the free or reduced lunch program. Our demographics consist of 75% Hispanic, 15% African American and approximately 10% White, Asian or Mixed Races. The average family income is $13,000. The mission of Bing Wong Elementary School is to ensure that students are held to high expectations. Through high quality instruction, students are inspired and prepared to learn, relearn, and acquire new information through the application of 21st century skills. All stakeholders will collaborate to design, develop, and provide learning experiences that prepare students for college and expose them to a variety of career pathways beyond traditional boundaries in safe, respectful and welcoming environments. We believe that through valuable, engaging experiences, our students will set goals for their future and begin to create a path to achieve those goals. We believe that it is never to young to have HOPE and a goal to strive for. We know that the Arts is an avenue that will indeed be that `hook' to keeping students engaged and in school and we are committed to providing a solid program in the upcoming school year that will provide these avenues for students. Bing Wong Elementary is on the path to becoming a National STEAM demonstration school and in April 2016 we opened our iSTEAM lab. The iSTEAM lab stands for the following: i= innovation, inspiration, imagination S- Science T Technology E- Engineering A -Arts M -Math Through small group and whole group lessons, students are supported in a variety of projects that range from designing Math manipulatives in Kindergarten to designing personal designs via the CNC Mill 3D printer in 6th grade. All areas of STEAM are integrated and we realize that more intentional focus will need to occur in the Arts area this upcoming school year. In order to do this, we have partnered up with the Art Institute of the Inland Empire. According to an Arts Institute representative, "The Art Institute of California — Inland Empire, a campus of Argosy University, is a place where Creative Warriors are pushed, challenged, and supported every day. Where talent rises to the top, and the rush of excitement that comes from seeing ideas come to life simply can't be matched. 8 V. Project Description/Need Statement continued Since opening our doors in 2006, we have more than 2,700 graduates, established partnerships with companies like The San Bernardino Police Department, ESRI, Bing Wong Elementary, and several community colleges and restaurants throughout the Inland Empire. We continue to provide a creative learning environment that can help our students become leaders and tireless innovators dedicated to improving lives here at home and around the world." In the 2017 -18 school year we would like to expand our partnership with Al to include art classes, workshops, professional development opportunities for teachers and frequent learning excursions for students. The Art Institute is unique in that it prepares students for practical careers replicating a higher learning college structure. Both aspects encompass our school mission of providing learning experiences that prepare students for college and exposes them to a variety of career pathways beyond traditional boundaries in safe, respectful and welcoming environments. We would also like to continue to provide classes in Performing and Fine Arts. Currently we have classes in Hip Hop and Folklorico with 10 -12 participants per class. Expanding the number of participants will increase engagement for more students and also bring cultural awareness to the community as these groups present two times a year (a mid year student showcase and the end of the year Multi - Cultural Festival). In addition, we believe that incorporating Art Assemblies, showcasing professionals, will provide lasting experiences for students. Currently our 6th graders are learning more about journalism and film in order to highlight the positive areas of San Bernardino through our Dangerous City News broadcast ( https:// www. youtube .com/watch ?v= ef6arKJgT9U). We also have a focus in our iSTEAM Lab to create visual artists as they design, create and display their creations. All aspects of the Arts tap into student's creativity and personal expression, which engages and motivates students to be successful academically and socially. We are committed to teaching the whole child and we believe that incorporation of the Arts will help achieve this goal. VI. Dr. Wong was an avid supporter of education and supported students in the San Bernardino area through providing scholarships. He was an immigrant to the United States from China and became a well -known restauranteur. He didn't have the opportunity to receive formal education but felt the importance of supporting others pursuit of higher education. In 1963, the Bing S. Wong Scholarship Foundation was created which awarded more than $500,000 to about 500 students throughout the San Bernardino City Unified School District. Since 2015 Bing Wong Elementary has been actively moving towards the path to become Bing Wong Career Exploration Academy. Our mission supports his life long mission to enhance the lives of students in the San Bernardino community. Providing students with the experience and exposure to a variety of careers in Kindergarten through 6th grade will not only enhance motivation and engagement, but give our students opportunities to learn and experience careers that they may not have ever been exposed to before. Through calculated partnerships in the San Bernardino community we strive to create successful, driven and goal oriented adults that will in turn bring resources right back into our community. XI. What have you done before in the category of arts? continued Community Arts Highlights: For the past 6 years we have enriched the community of San Bernardino with our annual Multi - Cultural Festival. Local musicians, dancers and Bing Wong students take the main stage to celebrate our unique cultural differences in an arena that promotes unity, love and togetherness. Our community looks forward to this event each year and each year it continues to grow. On April 19, 2016 we opened up our iSTEAM lab. The lab services about 500 students ranging from K -6th grades. Students get hands -on experience in learning 3D CAD design in Tinkercad, and graphic design with CorelDraw and SolidWorks. Recently Bing Wong Industries was established which is made up of 3rd -6th grade students. This group of students will design customized products to sell on their website. Every month we have a Community Maker Fair, which allows our school community the opportunity to `Meet their Inner Maker'. On these evenings families are able to make a tangible project using the iSteam lab equipment. Current Arts Partnerships: In November 2016 we were adopted by Garner Holt Productions. His company is a leader in Animatronics. This adoption created a sustainable partnership that will provide professional experiences and opportunities that will inspire and support our staff and students. In 2016 we also partnered up with the Art Institute of Inland Empire. Through this partnership a few teachers have taken workshops in the area of Fashion to help highlight Multi- cultural costumes in our annual Multi- Cultural Festival Fashion Show. We also were able to send two classes of students to the Arts Institute to receive a `Pasta Immersion' Workshop. Sixth graders spent the day making pasta and got an amazing experience in Culinary Arts. During their "Chemistry of Cuisine" Tiger Culinary Course, they made Egg Pasta from scratch and 3 different sauces including a Turkey and Beef version of Bolognese and a fresh Basil and Pine Nut Pesto. Students were taught by AiCAIE Alumni, Joshua Bou who had recently returned from Italy on a study abroad opportunity. Current students, Denia Rivas and Oscar Hernandez (both Fall 2016 graduates in with an AS in Culinary Arts) and Graphic Design student, Jennifer Vargas also assisted the students with their hands on experience. Each table was able to create their pasta and learn to work in a true culinary team, following sanitation and safety and fundamental skills of pasta. At the end, sauces were demonstrated, their pasta was prepared and they were able to taste their creations. Students also took home recipes and a special "Tiger Culinary Course" Completion certificate signed by Chef Lee Van On and designed by Jennifer Vargas. We are looking forward to more experiences and opportunities like the ones above to bring the community of San Bernardino together and to expand our partnerships in the upcoming 2017/18 school year. With our quest to becoming a National STEAM school we are aware that the Arts area is where we are lacking. Providing experiences and cultural awareness with the Arts being that springboard will allow us the ability to engage a group of students that we may not have been able to truly engage before. Through community partnerships, Bing Wong has been able to provide experiences in Career Exploration to the entire population of students. We know that this would not be possible without community support and partnership funds. We are thankful for the opportunity to continue this work with the Arts being the focus next school year and we are hopeful that you will consider funding our grant to make this happen. Thank you for your consideration, Ryan Rainbolt Principal Bing Wong Elementary 909 - 888 -1500
