Project Description /Need Statement Junior University Musical Theatre will provide the residents of San Bernardino and the Inland Empire with a William R. Dixon original adaptation of 'Peter Pan'. This musical theater work, including a live orchestra, will involve over 100 young people in all aspects of production. Junior University's General Manager, Paul Reed, will oversee all Expenditures of funds for this program. Patsy Dixon, Artistic Director, will direct the artistic aspects of the production. The organizations commitment to our mission will be evaluated by our President, Robert Ritter. Junior University intends to meet two needs of the local San Bernardino area. 1. We will provide a forum for young people to perform in an educational environment under professional direction in music, drama, dance, and stagecraft; missing in today's schools. Our goal is to help young performers learn and apply the skills that are needed to succeed not only in theatre but in any collaborative environment The number of qualified young people at auditions is evidence of the reduction in school musical activities. 2. We will provide wholesome entertainment specifically designed to encourage family attendance; by offering the experience of quality musical theater, with a live orchestra, to a segment of the community that cannot afford 'professional' prices. The number of families attending our productions provides the best proof of the need for affordable family entertainment. Junior University would not exist without the strong ongoing support of many businesses in San Bernardino. Our partnerships include: 1) Dozens of businesses that provide donations for advertisements in our show program, 2) The Pizza Hut across from our venue passes out discount coupons to the show and donates 20 percent of the money they make selling pizzas during intermission and 3) local businesses underwrite two FREE nights of theatre for the underserved families of our community. Future Objectives After a great amount of deliberation, the Board of Directors of Junior University has made the painful decision that 2017 will be our last year staging our shows at The Bowl in Perris Hill Park. Our productions have witnessed an almost fifty percent drop in attendance from our "best" years (1995 — 2004). While attendance of 7,000 is admirable for a community theatre; we have decided that the continual decline in attendance makes it impossible to justify the cost and commitment required in setting up, and taking down, our theater each year. Because the Board still believes that Junior University is an important element of our community, we want it to continue. We have entered into a partnership with Aquinas High School to use their new Performing Arts Center to stage our productions, allowing us to continue to serve the Inland Empire community from a location within City of San Bernardino. With this move, we will be utilizing a space outfitted for stage productions and therefore not require most of the technical equipment we have needed at the Bowl. Our plans are to sell our equipment after Peter Pan to help offset the projected budget overrun. We anticipate that this move will allow us to produce family musicals for many more years. 5 X. Provide a brief history /background of your organization /school project (s). (What you have done before in this category of the arts. Junior University began in 1962 as a children's summer activity in the backyard of Robert and Barbara Henley. One hundred and fifty people saw the first show. Since 1963, Junior University's musical shows have been original adaptations of familiar children's stories written and scored by William R. Dixon. In 1965, the Henleys and William and Patricia Dixon formed a non - profit corporation. That year, the popular productions found a home at Roosevelt Bowl in San Bernardino's Perris Hill Park. A full orchestra composed of local musicians and students was added in 1968. In 1994 Mr. Dixon passed away. Junior University continues our summer family tradition by updating shows from 25 original musicals written by William R. Dixon. These musical adaptations are based on classic children's stories and are all targeted for a family audience. For fifty -four years, Junior University has provided San Bernardino and the Inland Empire the best family entertainment while offering an exciting and educational experience for young people. Cast members range from 9 years old to beyond college age, with teenagers as the majority. Because Junior University is such a large commitment in both time and energy, it often involves the entire family. The rewarding learning experience is a wonderful opportunity for new friendships in addition to providing a stepping stone for those interested in professional and community theater. In 2005 we extended our commitment to the area youth by starting a scholarship program. Our goal is to keep ticket prices from increasing beyond the reach of the underserved families in our community. There is a wide range of donation options provided. These include the cast bowl -a -thon, individual donations, program advertisements, and corporate sponsors. Past Sponsors include: Edison International, The Thomas J. Long Foundation, Century 21 Lois Lauer Realty, The Kenneth T. & Eileen L. Norris Foundation, PrimeLine Products Co., Wells Fargo Foundation, The Press - Enterprise, Arrowhead Credit Union, Immanuel Baptist Church, San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, Gresham Savage, Inland Empire Health Plan and the James Irvine foundation. We continue to add to the list. XI. Attach a copy of your last fiscal year financial report, audited or unaudited. This does not apply to schools or parks. As a child, it held an aura of mystery and magic for me. I still remember going to see JU's Sleeping Beauty in 1996 and being captivated by the characters on stage. As we grow up, that sense of wonder often goes away. We get bogged down in the practicalities of life, the disappointments we experience, the tragedies that happen around us... and we forget that, if we look for it, there is still good all around us. There is still love, and joy, and miracles — we just have to be open to seeing it. I hope that this play will not only be a magical experience for the children who see it, but will serve as a reminder to the adults in the audience to keep their eyes open. I'd like to thank the cast, crew, parents, production team, and board ofJunior University for devoting their summer to the pursuit of theatre magic. On their behalf, I thank you for your support ofJunior University and live theatre. We hope that you enjoy the show. Anna Hightower 4 An Mg tower Director Anna is thrilled to be directing this summer's production at Junior University, after spending many of her own childhood summers on this stage. Her directing credit-8 include last summer's Jungle Book, and A Philadelphia Story and Hairspray at John W. North High School, where she is the theatre teacher. She has been seen performing across the country; her favorite roles include Olive in The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, Sandra in All Shook Up, and Rapunzel in Into the Woods. Anna is grateful to the JU family for continuing to support her love of theatre, Sleeping Beauty's amazing production staff, cast and crew for all of their hard work, her parent,8 for the many nights they spent driving her to rehearsal, and her husband for going on this journey with her. Choreographer LIEPEN KING Lieren is very excited to be back choreographing her third production with Junior University! Sleeping Beauty was the first JU show Lieren saw and that her brother was in. She has always wanted to be involved with it again at some point. Currently Lieren is working on obtaining her boards in different fields for ultrasound technology, which she graduated from last year. While studying for those, Lieren is also working at a high risk OB Dr's office as an ultrasound tech, m well as teaching dance at Valverde school of performing arts and line dance at the Brandin' Iron. Having had Snow White as her first JU choreographer experience followed by Jungle Book last year, Lieren hopes to have many more years in her future with this amazing organization. She can't thank this organization enough for how much it has shaped her life growing up and the difference it has made. She hopes it will always be a part of her life. Through the vision of founders Robert Henley and William R. Dixon, Junior University has become more than a troupe of performers providing quality entertainment for the San Bernardino valley, more than a training ground for aspiring young actors. It has become a true family; a family which continues to grow and to spread the musical enchantment of the many Dixon shows produced over the 54 years of Junior University's history. In 1962, the late Robert Henley sought a way to provide both an outlet for the youthful energy of the neighborhood children and a way of imparting to them a love for the theatre. That summer, he and his wife Barbara decided to produce a children's show in their backyard. After a second popular production F.< in 1963, Henley met with William and Patricia Dixon to begin a collaboration on the William R. Dixon, Composer & Co-Founder next show. The two men incorporated Junior University in 1964 and since then Bill Dixon's music has been the heart of Junior University productions. Over the years, hundreds of young people have enjoyed their own fairy tale stories as they have received the opportunity, through Junior University, to display their talents. "There is no one person in this valley who changed more young lives positively than William R. Dixon," reflected Bob Henley at Dixon's memorial in 1994. "He understood good stories ... ideas that piqued the interest of kids. If you can get the interest of children, you can work with them. Teach them. Communicate with them." Wayne Scott said, "Bill Dixon always i, found, encouraged, and developed the very best in people... The art of Billy Dixon works. It offers hope. It reaches people. It touches people. It moves people. It changes people... Billy Dixon and his art will continue to touch lives and make a difference in our world for years to come." Robert Henley, Co-Founder PA Although both Robert Henley and William R. Dixon have passed on, Junior University is proud to continue the work they began. As a non - profit public benefit corporation, Junior University relies on ticket sales, program advertising, concessions, and the efforts of volunteers. If you are interested in learning more about Junior University, please call 909- 889 -0833 or write to P.O. Box 2356, San Bernardino CA 92406. Auditions for next year's show will be held at 9:00 AM on May 6 and 13, 2017. Check for the location on our Website, which can be found at www.junioruniversity.org. Gabby Mason Assistant Choreographer Gabby is thrilled to be a part of the production staff in her first show as assistant choreographer. She started ballet at five, joined the musical theatre world as a high school freshman and has been doing theatre ever since. She particularly loved dancing in "Chicago the Musical" in 2014. The first JU show she did was "The Jungle Book" in 2008, and she has also been a part of "Aladdin," "Robin Hood," "The Wizard of Oz" and "Snow White." She would like to thank Lieren King for the opportunity to work on this wonderful production and Erin Tierney, her partner in crime for this show. She also thanks the cast, crew, and production staff for all their hard work to make this show come to life. Erin Tierney Assistant Choreographer Erin is super excited to be back as an assistant choreographer for the second summer in a row! She assisted with "Jungle Book" last summer, and has also performed in every JU show for the past 9 years. You may recognize her from "The Wizard of Oz," where she played the role of Dorothy in JU's 50th anniversary production. Her other roles include Babette in "Cinderella," Zingara the Gypsy Queen in "Snow White," and many others. Her first show with JU was actually "Sleeping Beauty" in 2006! Erin is currently a senior at Cal State Fullerton, where she is earning her BFA in Musical Theatre. Having gained her love for theatre at JU, she hopes to continue pursuing her love for theatre professionally. Because Junior University is not just a theatre group, but also an educational organization, we have developed a scholarship program for our participants. The purpose of the scholarships is to reward deserving participants who have demonstrated a commitment to theatrical arts.
