HomeMy WebLinkAbout01-12-2016 FAC reg mtg minutesFINE ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES FOR TUESDAY, JANUARY 12, 2016 In Attendance: Gigi Hanna, City Clerk Steven Graham, City Attorney's Office Kerry Peterson Commissioners: Dorothy Garcia, Chairperson Barbara Babcock Deborah Bunger Michael Segura Bronica Taylor Absent: Donna Howard Meeting called to order by Chairperson Garcia on Tuesday, January 12, 2016 at 4:05 p.m. in the MIC Conference Room, 6th Floor of City Hall. COMMISSIONER/STAFF ANNOUNCMENTS Chairperson Garcia announced that there would be a new exhibit of the Inland Empire Museum of Art at San Bernardino Valley College beginning on January 21, 2016. She stated that the Inland Empire Museum of Art was also having a reception for the exhibition on Tuesday, January 26, 2016 from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Commissioner Taylor announced that a Dr. Martin Luther King Prayer Breakfast would be held on January 18, 2016 at Cal State University, San Bernardino. She stated that there would be a freedom bus ride down to the Martin Luther King statue after the breakfast. Commissioner Taylor stated that Pastor Dennis Brown would be having a Dr. Martin Luther King program on January 17, 2016. GUEST SPEAKERS Micah Escamilla, Photographer, gave a presentation on her Windows Proposal for her photography project. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A motion was made by Commissioner Segura to approve the Minutes of December 8, 2015. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Babcock. Motion passed. Fine Arts Commission — January 12, 2016 Page Two A motion was made by Commissioner Segura to approve the Minutes of November 10, 2015. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Bunger. Motion passed. NEW BUSINESS Grants Evaluation of 2015 -16 Grants Chairperson Garcia gave the commissioners copies of the Grants Evaluation for review. Windows Proposal, Micah Escamilla, Photographer Commissioner Segura made a motion to support Micah Escamilla's window project. The motion was seconded by Commission Taylor. Motion passed. Potential December 2, 2016 Memorial City Clerk Hanna recommended that the Fine Arts Commission put out a call for proposals for an appropriate memorial for the victims of the December 2, 2015 mass shooting. She stated that the memorial would be on December 2, 2016. A consensus motion was made by the commissioners to explore this item further. OLD BUSINESS Acquisition Policy Review — Steven Graham Steven Graham, Deputy City Attorney explained the policy revisions and changes on the Art Acquisition Policy. A motion was made by Commission Taylor to approve the Art Acquisition Policy with changes. The motion was seconded by Commission Babcock. Motion passed. Grants Workshop Assignments (for January 21 and January 26) Chairperson Garcia handed out a Timeline for FAC Grants for FY2015 -16 to the commissioners for review. She also stated that he Grant workshops would be held on January 21 and January 26, 2016. Chairperson Garcia and Commissioners Taylor, Babcock, Bunger and Segura would attend the January 21, 2016 workshop and Chairperson Garcia and Commissioners, Babcock, Bunger, Howard, Ohiy, and Peterson would attend the January 26, 2016 workshop. Setting date to make recommendations to MCC A motion was made by Commissioner Taylor to change interview of grant applicants to March 5, 2016. The motion was seconded by Commission Segura. Motion passed. Art Walk An update was given by Chairperson Garcia. She stated that the Art's Festival would take place on Thursday, May 19, 2016. Hip Hop Proposal Chairperson Garcia stated she had sent Untapped Hip Hop a grant application. Fine Arts Commission — January 12, 2016 Page Three Report on Multicultural Festival — Bronica Taylor Commissioner Taylor stated that the Multicultural event would be postponed for now. January Calendar PUBLIC COMMENTS Cathy Grier, NYC Subway Girl, gave a brief description of her experience as a performer in the New York subway. She also asked about the possibility of receiving a grant as a transient performer. She performed a song she wrote, entitled "Rise Up ". ADJOURNMENT The meeting adjourned at 5:24 p.m. on January 12, 2016. The next Fine Arts Commission meeting will be on Tuesday, February 9, 2016 at 4:00 p.m.., in the MIC Conference Room, 6th Floor of San Bernardino City Hall. Respectfully submitted, Valerie R.
