HomeMy WebLinkAbout08-11-2015 FAC reg mtg minutesFINE ARTS COMMISSION MINUTES FOR TUESDAY, AUGUST 11, 2015 In Attendance: Gigi Hanna, City Clerk Erika Murphy, Mayor's Office Gene Sasse, Curator of the IEMA Phil Yeh, Artist Commissioners: Dorothy Garcia, Chairperson Barbara Babcock Ruben Chavez Donna Howard Lynette Kaplan Olena Ohiy Michael Segura Bronica Taylor Absent: None Meeting called to order by Chairperson Garcia on Tuesday, August 11, 2015 at 4:00 p.m. in the MIC Conference Room, 6t' Floor of City Hall. COMMISSIONER/STAFF ANNOUNCEMENTS Commissioner Chavez reported that Council Member Marquez expressed interest in donating her micro grant funds to the Cesar Chavez sculpture. He handed out information on potential artists and their work. Chairperson Garcia announced that the Arts Connection (County Art Council) would be having a conference on September 26, 2015. She also announced that the San Bernardino Art Association opened an exhibition at the National Orange Show which was ongoing for the month of August on Fridays and Saturdays. Chairperson Garcia also announced that the entertainment for Third Thursday Food Fest would be Center of the Spiritual Living. APPROVAL OF MINUTES A motion was made by Commissioner Babcock to approve the Minutes from July 15, 2015. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Segura. Motion passed. Fine Arts Commission — August 11, 2015 Page Two GUEST SPEAKER - Inland Empire Museum of Art Gene Sasse, Curator of the Inland Empire Art Museum, gave a presentation on the history of the museum and handed out a packet with various information that the museum provided to the public. He stated that the biggest hurdles and goals at the present time were to raise money and find a space. The Fine Arts Commissioners discussed possible future sites for the Inland Empire Museum of Art. City Clerk Hanna stated that she would speak to Bill Manis, Deputy City Manager and Mark Persico, Director of Community Development about the availability of space for the Inland Empire Museum of Art. NEW BUSINESS Election of Chair and Vice -Chair for 2015 -26 A motion was made by Commissioner Babcock to nomination Dorothy Garcia for a second term as Fine Arts Commission Chairman. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Taylor. Motion passed. A motion was made by Commissioner Taylor to nominate Barbara Babcock as Fine Arts Commission Vice Chairman. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Segura. Motion passed. July Arts Calendar Chairperson stated that the Parks, Recreation, and Community Services events were listed on the calendar and she suggested that commissioners go the Community Center to see what type of art projects are being performed. Budizet for 2015 -16 City Clerk Hanna reported that $200,000.00 was budgeted for FY 2015/2016. She also indicated that there was money left over from last year, but it was not added to the new budget. She was told by the City Manager's office if additional money was needed, the request would have to go to the City Council. A motion was made by Commission Taylor to delay discussion on the 2015/2015 Budget until the Fine Arts Commission has a clear understanding of finances. The motion was seconded by Commissioner Bunger. Motion passed. Fine Arts Commission — August 11, 2015 Page Three OLD BUSINESS Grants Process Update Commissioners Garcia, Howard, and Babcock agreed to serve on the Grants Process Subcommittee. Multicultural Festival Report Commissioner Taylor stated that she would be meeting with the Subcommittee and the partners involved. She was hoping to meet on the last Thursday of each month at 4:00 p.m. in the MIC. She also asked commissioners for suggested dates for the Multicultural Festival. Update on Micro Grant Erika Murphy, Mayor's office gave the commissioners an update of the micro -grants process. Art Acquisition Policy No action taken. PUBLIC COMMENTS None ADJOURNMENT Meeting adjourned August 11, 2015 at 5:36 p.m. The next Fine Arts Commission meeting will be on Tuesday, September 15, 2015 at 4:00 p.m., in the MIC Room, Sixth Floor of San Bernardino City Hall.
