Lorraine Velarde, Mayor' s Executive Assistant 94 APR -1 A 9 :23 FROM: Margie Vance, Senior Secretary SUBJECT: COUNCIL MEETING - MONDAY, APRIL 4 , 1994 DATE: April 1, 1994 COPIES : City Clerk' s Office; Council ' s Office EMPLOYEE RECOGNITION AWARDS: MID-MANAGEMENT CATEGORY a) Don Johnson, Equipment Mechanic Supervisor, Public Services/Garage, has provided valuable leadership to a team, which prior to his supervision, was suffering from low morale, lack of motivation, and poor overall performance. Through his organizational skills, leadership, dedication and enthusiasm, he has been successful in creating a work environment where communication, creativity, mutual respect, and pride in their work abound. His subordinates are noticeably happier and the overall performance of the shop has greatly improved. SAFETY CATEGORY b) Jon Waterhouse, Detective, Police Department, was assigned a double homicide, where there was little evidence, no witnesses, and the bodies, having been doused with gasoline and set on fire, could not be identified for days. The case would still be unsolved had it not been for Detective Waterhouse' s diligence, and tenacity. In addition to carrying a heavy workload, Jon kept working on this case for approximately eight (8) months which resulted in the arrest of four persons, arrest warrants for two more, and finding the original scene of the crime. Jon is an example of true dedication and commitment to the police department. GENERAL CATEGORY C) Chad Lynde (pronounced Lin-Dee) , Animal Shelter Attendant, Animal Control Department, also performs the duties of Volunteer Coordinator and Trainer, Summer Youth and Probation Supervisor, Building Maintenance worker "extraordinaire" and Disaster Preparedness and Response Team member. When Chad was hired in 1989, he took it upon himself to fix things in need of repair - be it equipment or the facility. He works long and hard hours without complaint and he fixes almost everything that needs repair. By voluntarily doing so, Chad has saved the city thousands of dollars in building and equipment repair costs. Chad is a dedicated and loyal employee who truly merits this recognition. i COUNCIL PRESENTAT1,jNS March 29, 1994 Page 2 PROCLAMATIONS• "d) Jerry Weitzman, Chapter representative of the Society for the Preservation and Encouragement of Barbershop Quartet Singing in America, Inc. , will accept the BARBERSHOP HARMONY WEEK proclamation. (Note: A Barbershop quartet may present a musical number) . `e) Dr. Charles Terrell, Chairman of the Baseball Committee, Jean Stephens, President and Judy Thompson, Executive Vice President, of the San Bernardino Area Chamber of Commerce will accept the SAN BERNARDINO SPIRIT BASEBALL WEEK proclamation. (Note: Spirit Baseball Team representatives will also be in attendance, they are as follows: Dave Elmord'and Donna Tuttel�- Co-Owners of the Spirit Baseball Team, Jim Wehmeier, General Manager and Greg Mahlberg; Team Manager of the Spirit Baseball Team. f) Dick McGreevy, Disaster Preparedness Coordinator, Jim Burns, Chair and Cynde Frazen, Co-Chair of the Earthquake Mitigation Task Force, will accept the EARTHQUAKE PREPAREDNESS MONTH proclamation. _(Note: Members of the Earthquake Mitigation Task Force will also be in attendance they are as follows: Mel Upp, Linda Turcotte, Willie Smith Kathy Sokol Loretta Roth and Anita Greenawalt) . 'g) Barry McCarroll, Site Chairman for Walk-America, and Bill Payne, overall Chairman of Walk-America, and Debbi Lee, Director of County Services Inland Chapter for the March of Dimes and Chairperson of the San Bernardino WalkAmerica, will accept the WALKAMERICA/TEAM WALK DAY proclamation. (Note: Debbi will introduce the Ambassadors for the March of Dimes and will provide brief background information 'h) Helen Bogatin, President of the California Retired Teachers Association, San Bernardino Valley Division No. 14 . , will accept the CALIFORNIA RETIRED TEACHERS ASSOCIATION DAY, SAN BERNARDINO VALLEY DIVISION NO. 14 proclamation. PRESENTATION• i) Nicholas Jesus Diaz Garrido, Comandante Jefe, Fuerz Aerea de Espana, will accept the CERTIFICATE OF FRIENDSHIP.
